MicrOsiris for the PC Van Eck Computer Consulting announces the second release of the MicrOsiris statistical analysis and data management package for microcomputers. Six new programs have been added to the MicrOsiris system since its original release in August 1988. Several others were expanded, bringing the total to 30 powerful commands. Among the additions are Factor Analysis, Multiple Classification Analysis, Aggregation, Configuration Comparison, Cluster Analysis, and Mergechecking. Repetition variables have been added to selected commands for multiple analyses. Like its mainframe parent, OSIRIS IV, MicrOsiris is particularly strong on data management, cleaning and validation. It accepts over 1000 permanent variables and as many cases as you can get on your takes only 256 K of user memory and 0.8 megabytes of disk space, and works on any DOS-based machine-including the Zenith 2100. MicrOsiris also runs on networks, using local storage for work space. Although intended primarily for serious survey analysis using moderate to large data sets, MicrOsiris’ speed, low cost, and minimal memory/storage requirements make it eminently suitable for introductory courses in statistics and applied survey research methods. Further, MicrOsiris has an interactive statistical decision tree for choosing appropriate statistical techniques (comprehensive-not just for using MicrOsiris), and a help facility for aid in running a particular command. In addition to the usual basic statistics and functions, like hypothesis testing, classical regression (including stepwise and dummy variable) and correlation analysis, MicrOsiris can produce scatterplots, generate univariate and bivariate frequency distributions and related statistics, (including lambdas, gammas, taus, &i-square, and many others), non-parametric statistics, and analysis of variance. MicrOsiris has a full range of well-integrated data management facilities. Of special interest are the ability to handle weighted data, a powerful general purpose RECODE, and a program to check and validate “wide codes.” Commands and directions are provided to import data into the system and to reformat MicrOsiris datafiles for use with other systems, such as dBase and l-2-3. Minimum requirements: MS-DOS operating system level 2.0, 256k available user memory after booting, and two floppy disk drives.

Recommended machine configuration: MS-DOS operating system level 3.1 or above, at least 384k available user memory after booting, hard disk drive, numeric coprocessor. The MicrOsiris software requires about 800k of disk space plus a variable amount of free work space, depending on the command used and size of job. MicrOsiris can run from a two-floppy drive system, but a hard disk is recommended because of workspace limitations and slower initial program load time. Current pricing: $225, discounted to $110 for degree-granting institutions, with additional discounts for multiple copies and network stations. SIR/Easy SIR/DBMS, the world’s foremost scientific and research-oriented Database an exciting new addition to our product Management System, announces * * SIR/Easy * *. SIR/Easy is designed specifically for end users. It gives them the ability to query their SIR databases and produce all kinds of reports with NO PROGRAMMING! In addition to SIR/Easy, the SIR Database Management System has many other important features for scientific and research-oriented applications. Some of the features we provide include: Scientific Features - Case processing for case studies -wide range of mathematical functions - interfaces to SAS, SPSS, BMDP - built-in descriptive statistics - cross tabulation with cell statistics including percents and quantiles - ability to differentiate between various types of missing or undefined data. Data DictionaryA centralized active facility that ensures the validity and integrity of your data, provides security down to the field level, and provides support for value and field labels and codes. Flexible Data Extraction - End users can use SIR/Easy, more experienced users have SQL + for ad hoc queries, and application programmers have the full power of our own 4GL called PQL, the Procedural Query Language. PortabilityWith a single command, complete applications and data can be moved from PC’s to Cray Supercomputers and over 30 other computers and operating systems.
