antigens”

Japan, 1993 Topic to be decided in the near future. Finland, 1993 Topic: “4th IASLC Workshop on Small Cell Lung Cancer” In addition, educational programs and courses will be encouraged with the first one taking place in: Prague, Czechoslovakia, Sept. 13-l 5, 1992, and another one together with the European School of Oncology in May 3-7, 1993. Because of the increasing activities, the Board of Directors decided to set up guidelines for the planning and execution of both world conferences and workshops.

Lung Cancer The journal has now been converted from a journal containing news for the members to be a journal accepting peer-reviewed papers and review articles, editorials, critical comments, etc. Fig. 2 indicates the number of papers submitted to the journal during the last 3 years and Fig. 3 the number of pages. The authorship represents a great number of countries, e.g. 17 countries in 1991, and is thus in fact global. The circulation is over 1200 with 4/5 consisting of members of the IASLC. The journal has thus reached a size that should fertilize further expansion of the journal. Replacement was going to take place on the Editorial Board in order to effectuate rotation every 3 years.

IASLC Merit Award 1991 Thanks to a donation it has been possible to create an IASLC Award. The merits of the prize winner should include the following: * An IASLC member for at least 10 years * A member who over the years has manifested himself/herself at an international as a person engaged in the field of lung cancer either preclinically or clinically

level

* A member who has promoted the activities of the IASLC The Nominating Committee consists of the Officers and the Members of the Board and it was decided that the first year the Merit Award should be given to Clifton F. Mountain, Houston, Texas, USA. Miscellaneous Heine H. Hansen informed that thanks to the success of the IASLC and the expansion that has taken place, increasing interest has been shown the activities of the organization from the pharmaceutical industry. Bristol-Myers Squibb have expressed their willingness to provide IASLC with large grants in 1991 and in the coming years. Similarly, Asta Werke will give support to the IASLC. Some of the grants will be used to create support to educational workshop, consensus reports, invitation of younger colleagues to the meetings,

and awards to young investigators. The oranization was very thankful for this support, which makes possible an expansion of the activities. Unanimous support by the IASLC was given to a draft on antismoking measures prepared by the EEC. Ad 2: Report from the ‘fkeasurer R. Joss gave an updated report concerning the financial status of the IASLC. The income has been limited, and it had not been possible nearly to cover all the expenses of running the office in Copenhagen and the Treasurer’s office in Switzerland. Accordingly, the budget does not give a true picture of all the expenses. The economy was mainly burdened by the fact that only 606 out of 922 have paid their membership dues in 1991. One additional memo will be forwarded to the non-paying members with a request for payment of the annual dues with subsequent annulation of the membership if no payment has been received within 2 months. The use of credit cards will be made available in the future. The membership fee for the next years was set to US$ 100.

Ad 3: Report from the Auditing Committee The Auditing Committee (Matson, Finland; Sculier, Belgium; Motta, Italy) informed that the Treasurer’s report had been reviewed and accepted. Ad 4: Election of New Board Members and Officers The president has received a written report from the Chairman of the Nominating Committee (R.L. Souhami) who on behalf of the Nominating Committee (P. Drings, Germany; D. Payne, Canada; C.F. Mountain, USA; Y. Shimosato, Japan) unanimously suggested that Paul A. Bunn be elected as the new president-elect, Ugo Pastorino, Italy as the new Secretary, while P. Rocmans and Y. Shimosato should be elected as new members of the Board. The suggestions were all approved unanimously by the assembly.

Ad 5: Miscellaneous D. Payne, Canada, inquired about the procedures of electing the officers and the Nominating Committee. Hansen gave a detailed summary of the procedures according to the Bylaws of the IASLC, article 7, section 2. The Bylaws are to be found in the membership roster. Bleehen thanked the past president for his long-term commitment to the IASLC and expressed the hope that he will continue his various activities for the organization.
