OF THE GENERAL INTERNATIONAL

ASSEMBLY OF THE XIII CONGRESS SOCIETY FOR HEART RESEARCH Ann Arbor, Michigan Wednesday 17 May 1989

1. Dr W. G. Nayler (Immediate Past President) welcomed the members of the Society and congratulated Professor Y. Ito on assuming his appointment as President of the Society, Dr N. S. Dhalla on his appointment as President Elect, Professor D. J. Hearse on his election as Secretary General and Professor P. A. Poole-Wilson on his election as Treasurer. She thanked Dr Dhalla for his outstanding service over the past 17 years as Secretary General and she thanked Professor W. Kubler for his great help as Treasurer. 2. Dr Dhalla repeated the good wishes and congratulations of Dr Nayler, congratulated new members of the Council on their appointment and thanked retiring members of the Council for their many contributions. 3. Professor Ito thanked Dr Nayler for her contribution to the Society as President and Dr Dhalla for his longstanding service as Secretary General. Professor Ito proposed to the Society that Drs H. G. Zimmer, K. Chien, T. Ruigrok, K. Reimer, I. Anand and S. G. Chen be elected as new Council members. This was ratified by the General Assembly. Dr Dhalla also announced the formation of the Chinese Section of the Society and the reappointment of Dr A. M. Katz as Editor of the Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology. 4. Professor Ito announced that, according to the by-laws of the Society, the following Committees had been appointed: Executive Committee: Chairman: Y. Ito, Members: W. G. Nayler, N. S. Dhalla, D. J. Professor Ito announed that the 14th Congress of the International Society for Heart Research would be held in Kobe City in Japan between 10 and 14 May 1992. The Chairman of the Congress would be Professor Ito, the Secretary General would be Professor M. Nagano and the Chairman of the local Scientific Committee would be Dr M. Tada. Other members of the Organising Committee would be Dr K. Harumi, Dr S. Onishi and Dr M. Mochizuki. The two main topics for the meeting would be: “Molecular Mechanisms of Cardiac Function-Physiological and Pathological Basis” and “Signal Transducing Mechanisms in the Cardiovascular System”. Four Satellite Symposia were also proposed. It was pointed out that the 1992 Congress would coincide with the Silver Jubilee of the Society. 6. Dr Katz reported that the Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology was flourishing and thanked the Society and its members for their continuing support. The circulation of the Journal is currently growing, largely through increased subscriptions by members of the Society who have been offered a substantial discount by the publishers. 7. The immediate Past President, President Elect and President expressed their thanks and the thanks of the Society to Dr B. Lucchesi and his colleagues for their hard work in organising the Ann Arbor meeting and Dr Lucchesi expressed his thanks to the Society and to its members, for their participation in the Congress. 8.
