Monitor Award ChemometricsAward Winner The 1996 Elsevier Chemometrics Award was presented to Dr. Terje Vegard Karstang of Norsk Hydro, Porsgrunn, Norway, at the 6th Chemometrics in Analytical Chemistry Symposium in Tarragona, Spain, 25-29 June 1996. Dr. Karstang won the award on the basis of the number and quality of his published papers and his substantial involvement in the development of the commercial code

SIRIUS. The awardee is selected by an international committee of leading scientists in the field. The task of the committee is to consider the accomplishments of the nominees mainly on the basis of one or more scientific papers, but contributions to the field of chemometrics in another form are also considered. The Elsevier Chemometrics Award is presented to a chemometrician younger than 40 years of age. The award was established to stimulate the careers of young scientists by rewarding

noteworthy accomplishments in chemometrics. The award consists of US$ 2000 and a commemorative scroll. There are no restrictions of nationality or professional affiliation. The nominees for the 1996 award were: Peter de B. Harrington, Frode Brakstad, Atilla Felinger, Terje Vegard Karstang, Christoph Klawun, H. Lohninger, Barry M. Wise. Meeting Announcement lind Miniaturisation in Liquid Chromatography versus Capillary Electrophoresis Conference, Ghent, Belgium, 27-28 May 1997 After the successful first event in May 1995, this second international meeting will take place at the Pharmaceutical Institute of Ghent University (Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences), in cooperation with the Universities of

Antwerp, Brussels, Leuven and Liege, and with KaHo St.-Lieven. Traditional separation techniques for scientific analysis, e.g. HPLC, use considerable amounts of expensive and environmentally damaging organic substances. The safe disposal of recycling of these materials results in increased costs for industry and poses serious environmental hazards in their handling. In recent years a number of new techniques such as narrow-microbore HPLC, capillary electrophoresis, and cap-

illary electrochromatography have been developed. These techniques involve miniaturisation to a significant degree, thus reducing costs and being much more friendly to the environment. The cited techniques have still not been accepted or routinely used in industrial undertakings, partly because of the lack of suitably trained personnel. This conference has as its principal objective the transfer of these technologically innovative techniques from university laboratories to produc-

tion and a n a l y t i c a l u n d e r t a k i n g s . The a i m s a n d scope of the conference are the t r a n s f e r of inform a t i o n to the i n d u s t r i a l , educational, and r e s e a r c h disciplines of an up-to-date r e p o r t on the analytical feasibilities of m i n i a t u r ised techniques, including narrowbore and c a p i l l a r y liquid chromatography, high performance thin l a y e r c h r o m a t o g r a p h y and electrically driven s y s t e m s such as capillary electrophoretic techniques. The focus will be on t h e development a n d i m p r o v e m e n t of analytical procedures and i n s t r u m e n tation by l e a d i n g companies. Special a t t e n t i o n will be d r a w n to

the development and application of sensitive detection techniques (e.g. luminescent, electrochemical, etc.). It is hoped the m e e t i n g will s t i m u l a t e the development of more ecologically-oriented analytics in the pharmaceutical, biochemical and clinical r e s e a r c h areas, as well as in the various routine quality control fields through a considerable reduction of waste solvents by down-scaling p r e s e n t chromatographic systems. The a d v a n t a g e s and restrictions of the diverse systems will be highlighted by invited lecturers from leading authorities, pointing out the c u r r e n t s t a t u s

and features of down-scaled liquid chromatographic methods comp a r e d w i t h the aqueous c a p i l l a r y electrophoretic techniques in particular.
