The bellows itself is protected by a n innovative b a n d design, which m a i n t a i n s a low stress e n v i r o n m e n t . The drive b a n d s have i n t e r m e s h i n g tags which create a positive metalto-metal drive t h r o u g h the seal, a n d also p r o m o t e s high grip to the shaft a n d greater torque capacity. Without requiring costly set screw drives, t h i s design reduces failure from s l i p p a g e on the shaft, while increasing the operating envelope. The positive drive b a n d s also enable bi-directional operation, e l i m i n a t i n g the necessity to stock both clockwise a n d anti-clockwise seals. Other design e n h a n c e m e n t s c o n t r i b u t e to increased seal life. A b a l a n c e d face design facilitates low r u n n i n g torque -a n d thus, low heat g e n e r a t i o n a n d wear. The new open coil design of the spring reduces the change of clogging, t h u s improving the seal's o p e r a t i n g parameters. The optimized design also evens the load distribution, thereby reducing u n e v e n wear. The seals have been tested for more t h a n 100 000 hours inhouse a n d with customers in the field.

Leak free isolation valves use stainless steel bellows
Spirax Sareo has l a u n c h e d a range of bellows sealed stop valves g u a r a n t e e i n g zero emissions in isolating applications. The valves use stainless steel bellows to e l i m i n a t e stem seal leaks suffered by c o n v e n t i o n a l valves with gland packing t h a t degrades d u r i n g n o r m a l use. Zero e m i s s i o n s e n s u r e the new valves offer a far lower total cost of ownership t h a n gland packed valves. Total cost of valve ownership includes all costs involved in purchasing, installing, operating a n d maint a i n i n g a valve. S u b s t a n t i a l savings are m a d e by e l i m i n a t i n g p r o d u c t wastage a n d reducing inspection and maintenance work• Bellows sealing also avoids operational problems caused w h e n g l a n d p a c k i n g is tightened, increasing the torque required to operate the valve.
