MULTIDIMENSIONAL EXPERIMENTAL PAIN STUDY IN NORMAL MAN : COMBINING PHYSIOLOGICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL INDICES. M, Luu', M.C. Bonnel*2 and F. Boureaul. 'Lab. Physiol., H^opitalStAntoine, Paris; 2UER, Psychol. Exp., Univ. Provence, Aix en Provence (France). Aim of investigation : We studied different physiological and psychological pain indices evoked by sural nerve electrical stimulation : biceps nociceptive RI11 reflex ; p sychological verbal responses on sensory and affective 7 categories scales. Methods : In a 1st experiment, ten subjects were submitted to i.v. morphinmtion (O.l4mg/kg).The effects were reversed by naloxone (O.Olmg/ kg). In a 2nd experiment using 18 subjects, intercorrelationsbetween the different physiological and psychological parameters were studied. Results : Four principal results emerged from our study. After morphine admizion, psychologica, lindices apparead to be more sensitive than physiological; indices calculated from the affective scale were more sensitive than the one calculated with the sensory scale. Correlations between RI11 threshold and subjective sensory and affective pain thresholds were respectively .52 and .62 (p
THE ABILITY OF A MATHEMATICAL MODEL TO ANALYZE CLINICAL ;ii,z:pz” DIFFERENCIES IN EFFECT OF LOCAL ANAESTESIA AND VIBRATION ON / PULPAL PAIN IN MAN. U.Fors, L.Edwall, G.Haegerstam & H.Sandberg? Dept. of Endods, Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden. Aim of investigation: Intradental Nerve impulse Activity (INA) induced by breif cold stimulation of human teeth is mediated by nerves of the Aregularly accompanied by pain perception. We have previuosly type and developed a mathematical model designed to describe and quantify the relation between the INA and the intensity of percieved pain. In this study the ability of the model to evaluate clinical differencies in effect of two different pain modulating procedures on experimental pulpal pain was investigated. Methods: In six human volunteers, implanted electrodes in lower incisor teeth and a simultaneous pain evaluation method were used to obtain recordings of INA and pain. After recording during control conditions, a pain
or vibra(either partial nerve block INA and pain. The 158 recordings obtained were analysed by means of the mathematical model giving the values of six parameters that determine the actual subject’s mode of reaction to painful stimuli. The values of the parameters were then compared and statistically analyzed to examine if any specific parameter change occurred due to the pain relieving prodedure used. Results: The partial nerve block consistently decreased 3 parameters and increased the reaction time. The effects of the vibration were not conclusive due to the great interindividual variation. Conclusions: The results indicate that the mathematical model was an applicable tool enabling detailed analysis of differencies in pain relieving procedures on human pulpal pain mediated by nerves of the A-type. modulating
