REVIEWS Chronic Bronchitis in Newcastle upon Tyne A. G. OGILVIE and B. J. NEWELL. The Royal Victoria Infirmary and the Medical School, Kings College, Newcastle upon Tyne. E. & S. Livingstone, Edinburgh. Pp. 1 IS. ISS. This small volume records an enquiry in an industrial city into the prevalence of chronic bronchitis and its associations with a number of external factors. It was estimated than 36 per cent of the male population and 17 per cent of the female had chronic bronchitis according to the definition adopted for the survey. There was a highly significant association with smoking, particularly the smoking of cigarettes, and some association with drafty and dusty working conditions and with residence in sooty, damp and foggy surroundings. (It appears to be assumed that smoking habits were the same in the various environmental and occupational groups compared.) The investigation is a valuable field study of a common and neglected disorder. There are few books about it, but as attention turns from tuberculosis to the other two common chest diseases, we may expect more to be published. This small book is a record of the Second European Symposium held in Switzerland during May 1956. Clinicians from most of the European countries, including England and Scotland, attended and took part in the discussions. There are 10 articles; 6 on the long-term chemotherapy of tuberculosis of the kidney, 2 on partial nephrectomy and 2 on the treatment of genital tuberculosis. Five of the articles are in English and the others have English summaries. The opinions expressed in the papers and discussions appear to coincide with those held in this country; and the collection is a useful record of current practice in this specialty.
