This report from the National Center for Health Statistics contains national estimates of the prevalence of heart and other circulatory conditions, known and previously unknown, among noninstitutionalized children age 6 to 11 years and youths age 12 to 17 years in the United States. These data are based on the diagnostic impression findings in the standardized examination and medical history from the Health Examination Surveys of 1963-1965 and 1966-1970. An estimated 2.4 per 100, or nearly 0.6 million children 6 to 11 years of age, and 4.6 per 100, or more than one million youths 12 to 17 years, have a significant cardiovascular condition as determined from the physicians' single-time examination diagnostic impressions. Based on medical history alone, the prevalence of previously known heart abnormalities is only slightly higher among youths (4.9 per 100) than among children (4.1 per 100). Findings are presented in text, detailed tables, and figures. Descriptions of the statistical design and methods used in the surveys and definitions of the demographic and socioeconomic terms used are included.
