C o n t r a c t for Belgian power plant f e e d w a t e r Ionics, Inc a n n o u n c e d in J u n e that it h a s signed an 11 year own a n d operate contract valued at over US$3 million to provide ultrapure boiler feedwater to a nuclear power plant in Belgium. The system, which will be engineered a n d supplied b y Ionics' French subsidiary, E a u et Industrie, will s u p p l e m e n t a smaller system which h a s operated successfully at the power plant for over a year. Commenting on the a n n o u n c e m e n t , Arthur L. Goldstein, c h a i r m a n and CEO of Ionics said, "The Belgium installation is the first nuclear power station in Europe to receive ultrapure water supplied b y a n Ionics system. Given the size of the E u r o p e a n nuclear power plant m a r k e t a n d our s u c c e s s in the USA, where Ionics currently h a s contracts to supply ultrapure water to 12 nuclear power plants, we look forward to a growing m a r k e t for our s y s t e m s on the continent." Japanese system available in UK The Kubota Membrane Bloreactor System, already in commercial application on 9 sites in J a p a n for the treatment of sewage, is now available in the UK via Davy International's Environmental Division. The system, capable of providing full nitrification/denitrlflcation in addition to exceUent BOD/COD a n d TSS removal, is based on the use of modules of fiat, panel m e m b r a n e s integrated into the aeration section of the biological reactor. The effluent quality obtained is likely to be of interest to industrial companies seeking water r e u s e / r e c y c l i n g opportunities. The polymeric olefinic m e m b r a n e material, with a n average pore size of 0.4 microns, is essentially non-fouling u n d e r n o r m a l operating conditions, while

the air induced crossflow a n d low t r a n s m e m b r a n e p r e s s u r e features of the design e n s u r e a lower operating cost, in contrast to more conventional, tubular m e m b r a n e systems. The use of m e m b r a n e s prevents blomass wash-out, as well as e n s u r i n g excellent effluent quality, including bacteriological parameters. Metal c l e a n e r recycling unit introduced US Filter Co rp h a s introduced its new Membralox Sflverback TM metal cleaner recycling system, capable of removing otis and other c o n t a m i n a n t s from high-temperature alkaline degreasing baths. The Membralox Silverback unit recycles the a q u e o u s cleaners typically found in the metal finishing, plating, m a c h i n i n g a n d fabricating industries. The unit is c o n s t r u c t e d of stainless steel and uses a ceramic m e m b r a n e to remove contaminates at temperatures up to 220°F. The Membralox Sllverback system reduces waste handling a n d the costs for replenishing a q u e o u s cleaners.
