K r a t o s announce Technology License agreement w i t h Johns Hopkins University Kratos Analytical has announced a Technology License agreement with the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. The agreement involves mass spectrometry techniques and instrumentation in biochemical and biotechnology-related analyses and, in particular, the use of time-of-flight technology. Kratos will work in close collaboration with R J Cotter and his group at Johns Hopkins University. Dr Cotter is Associate Professor of Pharmacology at Johns Hopkins and Director of the Middle Atlantic Mass Spectrometry Laboratory, a National Science Foundation Shared Instrumentation Facility. His research group has been involved for a number of years in the development of time-of-flight mass spectrometry for the analysis of biological molecules using ir and uv lasers and fast atom or ion beams as desorption and ionization sources. The group's on-going development of time-of-flight technology is also currently supported by the National Institutes of Health. Co-workers in the project include research associate Timothy Cornish and graduate student Marc Chevrier. Kratos Analytical's involvement in time-of-flight instrumentation has been in the analysis of surfaces where it has gained an enviable reputation in the development of high performance, reflection-based, 64

N e w brochure from Granville-Phillips describes instrumentation designed to help increase vacuum process p r o d u c t i v i t y The literature features Granville- Phillips productivity enhancing vacuum gauges, controllers, and valves used to measure and control pressure from atmosphere to ultra-high vacuum. The instrumentation can be configured to fit specific application needs using analogue and digital displays, process set points, modular packaging, and numerous output options. A graph displaying the measuring ranges and features of each gauge controller is included. Economical uhv diffusion p u m p f r o m Russia A new design of ultra-high vacuum diffision pump has been developed at the Academy of Sciences in Siberia. This pump, having extremely low oil vapour backstreaming (like Diffstak, Edwards or Crystal, Alcatel) differs from the world known commercial pumps in the following ways : (i) electric power is reduced more than 2 times; (ii) cooling water throughput is reduced 5-10 times ; (iii) warm-up time is 8 min ;
