Sulphites Concern Health problems associated with the use of sulphites is presently being monitored by Health and Welfare Canada. Sulphites are used as freshener and/or preservatives on fruits and vegetables. Some asthmatics have experienced mild to severe reactions to the substance, including breathing difficulties, gastro-intestinal disturbances, acute asthma attacks and possibly shock. Consumers are urged to read ingredient labels if they wish to avoid sulphites. Sulphiting agents include sulpher dioxide, potassium metabisulphite, sodium sulphite, sodium metabisulphite, sodium bisulphite and potassium bisulphite. Of greater concern, however, is the use of sulphites in foodservice operations. They are often used in salad bars. As a result of consultation with Health and Welfare Canada, the Canadian Restaurant and Foodservices Association (CRFA) has decided to make its members aware of the problem and discourage them from using sulphiting agents. Food Pacific '86 Canada's first International Trade Show on Food will be held in Vancouver, B.C., August 29 to September 2, 1986. New Nacan Facility Nacan Products Limited began in Canada as Meredith-Simmons Limited in 1926. To the adhesive line of the company, resins were added three years later, and today, Nacan is a leading manufacturer of Adhesives, Synthetic Polymers, and Starches. The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of National Starch and Chemical Corporation of the United States. Nacan's history of growth reaches a new stage with the start of construction of a $5 million facility on the 30th of September, 1985. To be built on a fiveacre site in Bramalea, Ontario, the facility will house the new corporate headquarters and the research and development centre. The new facility will be used by approximately ninety employees. From it, the Nacan management teams will direct corporate operations that involve over 400 employees in five manufacturing sites and six sales offices across the country. The new research and development centre will enable the Nacan scientists to continue to respond to the many challenges of the industries they serve. Today, Nacan supplies a wide variety of industries from book binding to baked goods, from automobiles to envelopes with over four hundred different products. To meet an ever growing demand in the marketplace, Tetra Pak has expanded its operation to include a new $20 million packaging materials plant which opened in October, 1985. Tetra Pak markets the flexible paper-based Tetra Brik carton in Canada for liquid foods which, over the past five years, has outperformed cans, glass, bottles and all other liquid containers. The new facility covers 160,000 square feet and houses the Canadian head office, production hall, utility/workshop area and production offices and will employ 120 people. CAFCE 1986 Conference Employers and educators across Canada are being invited to participate in the 1986 Annual Conference of the Canadian Association for Co-operative Education (CAFCE) being held at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, August 10-13, 1986. Timed to coincide with the running of Expo '86, the Conference has as its theme: "TEAMWORK: A CO-OPERATIVE INVESTMENT IN THE FUTURE", and will address issues of importance to the development of Canada's future employees and employers.
