Vacuum News Take the use of dry running vacuum pumps in a multi-purpose unit with a distillation facility for the manufacture of organic products. They have proved themselves the ideal pump system for the distillation of solvents such as methanol, toluene, xylene and tetrahydrofuran. Even after several thousand operating hours dry running pumps still function perfectly. This is hardly surprising as the rotors function entirely without mec ~anical contact and therefore without abrasion. The solvents are disti.led at pressures between 20 and 2 mbar. These vacuums can be produced effortlessly with Edwards" pumps, which have one Roots and two "claw' stages, far more easily than with water ring pumps or traditional oil-lubricated units. Furthermore, the solvents used in distillation are not contaminated either. They can be recovered using a condenser and reused, thus making significant savings. Drystar pumps combine outstanding performance with virtually maintenance-free operation. There are no expensive fluids to change and no need for costly disposal of contaminated used oil. Monitoring and control devices for temperature, cooling water, pressure and speed also mean that the pumps can operate unattended for long periods, ideal for extended distillation processes. L e i s k Engineering joins V S W Leisk Engineering has now become part of the VSW Group and has been renamed as 'VSW Technology'. It is expected that the combined strength of Leisk and VSW will serve users" requirements even better than in the past by offering a comprehensive range of quality ultra high vacuum products and components to meet all your needs at competitive prices. VSW Technology will continue to provide its customers with a first class uhv engineering service. This ranges from the supply of individual components through to the design and manufacture of complete custom built systems. In particular, VSW Technology will build on its design strength in thin film deposition to offer state-of-the-art systems based on magnetron sputtering and molecular beam technologies.

control and analytical measurements; facilities which are not currently available with standard RGA software. The POSTSOFT package is compatible with VG's Micromass PC, Sensorlab, Monitorr, SXP and SXP Elite instruments. The package will appeal to semiconductor and process environments, as well as for analytical applications including temperature programmed desorption (TDP), catalytic studies and gas reaction experiments. POSTSOFT enables stored logarithmic histogram files to be translated into total ion or mass profile data with a cursor revealing the relevant histogram display. Multiple ion data (MIM) also can be easily displayed on one screen with cursor selectable expansion, integration facility and analogue inputs which can be logged as the x- or y-axis with the gas measurement. All stored data can also be read into spreadsheets so that analytical or quality control data can be presented in any form. POSTSOFT is charged at a nominal price as part of VG's service to the quadrupole gas analyser (RGA) industry.

SXP Elite data sheet. The features and benefits of the new SXP Elite quadrupole gas analyser are described on an A4 full colour data sheet issued by VG Quadrupoles. The SXP Elite was introduced this autumn and is the first innovative, high performance RGA instrument to be launched by any manufacturer over the last few years. The unique design of the SXP Elite unit will ensure its widespread use in all demanding research and production gas monitoring applications. The design makes the instrument exceptionally easy to use as all quadrupole parameters can be adjusted from the front panel which features a split screen display, allowing analogue display and all user setting. The SXP Elite can be rapidly set up visually by either numerical entry, cursor entry or "twiddle" knob. Help gives access to a manual explanation and definition of all functions, and the memory facility allows up to 10 sets of quadrupole parameters to be stored, saving setup time when the experiment or application is changed. The SXP Elite is designed as a highly flexible, exceptional performance gas analyser with options for : very high resolution distinguishing deuterium and helium; the best 1-300 amu performance available with 1 ppm abundance sensitivity over the entire mass range; 1-1000 amu with 0.5 amu resolution peak width at mass 981. This unit is also capable of monitoring positive and negative ions, and has a unique energy analysis capability using an on-axis cylindrical mirror analyser (CMA). The latter option has been particularly successful as a diagnostic in plasma and ion-assisted processes. Further information from :
