C ONDITION MONITORING

The Plato module 25 allows the user to display noise and vibration data in three dimensions, while inspecting instantaneous 2-D slices.

New dimension to n o i s e and vibration analysis A n t h o n y Best Dynamics (ABD) has e x t e n d e d the capabilities of its Plato noise a n d v i b r a t i o n analysis system. The Plato syst e m software consists of modules d e s i g n e d to a c c o m p l i s h specific t a s k s s u c h as d a t a acquisition, processing a n d display. The new m o d u l e 25 ena b l e s t h e u s e r to d i s p l a y graphically a t h r e e - d i m e n s i o n a l m a p of v i b r a t i o n a n d noise data, while at the same time moving across the m a p to inspect 2-D slices. Being able to view the entire d a t a set in this way is of great benefit w h e n d i a g n o s i n g noise a n d v i b r a t i o n problems. Many forms of r o t a t i n g machinery produce vibration at frequencies synchronised to the speed of the shafts involved. In variable speed p u m p s , noise/ v i b r a t i o n testing should encompass the operational speed r a n g e of t h e m a c h i n e . D a t a acquisition systems typically therefore require the capability to synchronise t h e i r acquisition rates to the speed of reference shafts, to lock the analysis to the speed. The new m o d u l e 25 in Plato provides a choice of 3-D displays such as a waterfall diag r a m ( s h o w i n g noise level spectra at discrete shaft

s p e e d s ) or a c o l o u r - m a p p e d Campbell-type display (where noise levels are m a p p e d onto a s c a l e of c o l o u r s ) . T h e 3-D r e p r e s e n t a t i o n s are j u x t a p o s e d w i t h 2-D displays w h i c h ins t a n t l y u p d a t e as t h e u s e r moves t h r o u g h the 3-D d a t a s e t u n d e r precise control. The 2-D displays show the order spect r u m at the user selected speed a n d the order track (noise level at a selected m u l t i p l e of shaft speed a g a i n s t shaft speed). In the C a m p b e l l d i a g r a m representation, viewing the data from a b o v e i n t h i s m a n n e r often makes the identification of c o n s t a n t frequencies (reson a n c e s ) easier.
