Vacuum News Operation and maintenance of the new model is unchanged. The main uses for the new equipment are expected to be in instruments, electronic valves and devices, medical engineering and elsewhere in engineering where penetrations of up to 1 0 mm are needed. Torvac Ltd, Histon, Cambridge, UK

New Gelman modular clean benches A new range of laminar air flow work benches from Gelman Hawksley provides economical complete clean work stations. They are widely used in critical applications, such as the treatment of thin films, assembly of optical components and in electronic production and particle analysis laboratories. They are also used extensively in pharmaceutical applications, sterility testing, tissue culture preparation and drug formulation. All benches are tested to better than Class 100 with the Royco 245 Particle Counter. The new modular design allows the unit to be used individually or joined together to form longer benches. The top-quality steel construction allows long-term quiet operation with a high degree of confidence in the cleanliness of the working environment. New heavy-duty hydraulic line filters A new and ruggedly designed filter for both suction and return hydraulic line applications was recently announced by Lenz. The Lenz Model DH-R Heavy-Duty Line Filter is available for use in hydraulic systems operating at pressures up to 300 psi and at temperatures from - 6 0 ° to +300°F. The new design in the larger sizes incorporates special high-capacity elements in its disposable cartridge filter. Flow rates on these models are increased over 10%. The cartridge itself is readily accessible for quick, easy removal. The entire filter package is designed for simple installation between control valve outlet and tank, or between tank and pump inlet. Six different locations have been provided on the filter body to tap for indicating gauge outlets. Lenz Co., PO Box 1044, Dayton, OH 45401, USA

New

solid state

samplers

Sirco Environmental Systems Ltd announce their new solid state samplers--SAM 1 and SAM 2--the all-British effluent samplers. Using the well-proven Sirco patented vacuum sampling system. The standard (static), heavy-duty sampler (SAM 1) is encased in a weatherproof steel cabinet and module constructed with readily interchangeable chamber units, pressure/vacuum units, and electronic module. The timers, switches and relays are all designed into a single printed circuit board measuring 7,} x 4½ in. with

proportional-to-flow miniature plug-in P.C.B., for timer variation and interchangeable operation, etc. The SAM 2 is the smallest solid state true portable sampler in Britain today. It weighs 21 Ib complete with rechargeable batteries--it has done for sampling what the pocket calculator has done for accounting, at the same time maintaining all the well-proven features of the vacuum/pressure sampling system. Here again, the standard Printed Circuit Board contains all the timers, switches and relays. Sirco Environmental Systems Ltd, Unit 38, Grainger Road Industrial Estate, Southend-on-Sea, Essex, UK

New LDK low pressure switch Actuated Controls Ltd have introduced an improved version of their successful LDK compact low pressure switch. This new version retains the same physical dimensions but incorporates modifications designed to give improved performance and long product life ; the most important alteration is to the diaphragm seating, to give considerably improved diaphragm life. A new microswitch assembly is now fitted to give better switching performance and the customer's electrical connection is now by means of a clearly legended terminal block. The model LDK covers a pressure range of 7-1800 mm water gauge in 4 convenient pressure ranges and is suitable for use on pressure, vacuum and differential pressure applications. Pressure setting is by means of a calibrated dial which allows accurate adjustment without the use of a manometer. The case unit is fully weatherproofed as standard and measures only 80 x80 x70 mm. N e w e t h y l e n e o x i d e gas s t e r i l i s e r A new ethylene oxide gas steriliser for the sterilisation of items that cannot withstand moisture and heat in excess of 55°C has been designed and introduced by Dent ~- Hellyer Ltd, leading U.K. manufacturers of sterile control equipment. The new ethylene oxide gas steriliser, 'Dentethox', is being manufactured to meet the needs of modern hospitals, laboratories and similar manufacturing facilities which require effective sterilisation of heat-sensitive items such as heart-lung units, electrical and electronic apparatus, pre-packaged disposables, rubber and plastic items, bedding, clothing and powders. Features of the new machine include a series of fail-safe devices to ensure efficient operation, easily serviceable or replaceable solid state components, a comprehensive operator control panel and an automatic gas supply changeover control. Various chamber sizes are available. Dent and Hellyer Ltd, c/o Palmerston PR International, 18 Market Place, Romsey, Hampshire, UK

Think ahead and save on liquid nitrogen Many of the materials which are essential for research programmes are currently increasing in cost at an unprecedented rate. Liquid nitrogen is one which is particularly sensitive to inflationary price increases, requiring as it does energy for its manufacture, fuel for its distribution and labour both for its production and delivery.

The present trend of rapidly rising prices makes the whole question of liquid nitrogen supplies one worth re-examining. Investment in a liquid nitrogen facility provides an excellent means of beating inflation, because the capital cost of the equipment represents a major factor in calculating production costs. Once acquired, this contribution remains fixed over the life of the equipment, so 6~3
