Domnick Hunter Filters Ltd, has dropped the .word Filters from its name, to suit its broadening activities and to reflect its overseas operations-in future the company will be known as Domnick Hunter Ltd. The company, which was formed in 1963, made its name with the development of high-performance compressed air and gas filters.
These products have been complemented by a range of compressed air dryers which because of their compact size: energy efficiency and reliability are taking an increasing market share. Liquid filters now feature largely at the company and are experiencing a high rate of sales growth with broad market acceptability. Each component, (the decanter, feed/dosing pump set, hydrauhc drive unit and the switchboard), is mounted on its own wheeled base-plate for easy positioning at site. The decanter has full hydraulic drive and variable impeller centrate discharge for inde-
Water purification
A technology that renders harmless and utilises solid waste formed by deposition of suspended matter from industrial effluents has been developed by the Catalyst Intersectoral Scientific and Technical Complex of the USSR Academy of Sciences. ‘Examples of effluents to which it may be applied include waste water from wood-working and pulp-andpaper production, and active silt following biological purification of wastewater. The technology is based on 192
pendent adjustment of bowl speed, scroll speed and pond depth during operation. This ensures, for example, that ootimum slurrv dewatering or thickening can be achieved quickly and economically ’ where slurry quantity or time is limited. ‘Iwo-phase and 3-phase separations can be tested and the equipment is suitable for flame-proof environments. thermal-oxidative processing of organic water components in the fluidised layer of dispersed catalyst particles at 400-600°C. The resultant solid carboncontaining products have a porous structure with a specific surface of up to 200400m2/g and, very much like activated carbon, adsorb toxic components dissolved in waste water. Upon simple modification these products can be used as active coagulants, according to the Novosti Press Agency. The new technology therefore involves a cyclical process,,of

The company has also agreed to purchase all the shares of Total Absorb Inc., a private Richmond, B.C.-based industrial products distribution company. International Absorbents will issue 12000 of its common shares to Total Absorb’s shareholders.

deposit processing with subsequent product utilisation for adsorption-coagulation purification of waste water. Surplus solid product is removed from the cycle and used as an adsorbent. The size and metal-consumption of the devices is 15-20% less in comparison with known incineration technologies. If the deposits have a moisture content below 80%, the process can be made autothermal and gas discharges containing toxic organic substances, carbon, nitric and sulphurous oxides can be eliminated or sharply cut. A very ‘high degree of waste water cleansing of dissolved and suspended substances is achieved. method of purifying water from petroleum products, edible fats and other organic impurities has been devised. The method has been successfully tested at a number of industrial enterprises in Maritime Kray. Highly-porous materials such as gravel or ballast treated with gaseous carbohydrate (presumably hydrocarbon) compounds serve as the filter. Passing through this filter the water is almost completely purliied. The petroleum products are easily removed from the pores of the gravel when it is heated, enabling the filtering material to be used repeatedly. Marine ecologists have shown an interest in the innovation.
