Sealant assists pump manufacture Pump manufacturer Concentric has developed an improved method for sealing pressed steel water covers using a new hightemperature anaerobic sealant. Hylomar Ltd has developed the sealant in the UK for the pump manufacturer. Before the cover is press-fitted into the pump housing, the sealant is applied in wet form around the rim to close any airways caused by localized creases created by the pressing operation. Once cured after assembly, the sealant forms a flexible seal to prevent air or water leakage. Among the advantages claimed for the sealant

are that it can be injected rather than applied as a bead, and also that its rapid setting permits pressure testing within minutes. The temperature range is from –55°C to 210°C. Packing ring cutter for perfect scarf joints A new Packing Ring Cutter from James Walker is intended to remove the guesswork from producing neatly scarf-cut lengths of compression packing, and help form rings of the correct size for glands of pumps and valves. The aluminum alloy cutting jig is designed to be simple to use, with two precision scales – one for the inside diameter of the ring, the pump shaft or valve stem dimension, and the other for the packing section. Carefully cutting the compression packing in the cutter’s guide slot, with the knife supplied,

will produce 45° scarf joints that match precisely when the material is bent to form a ring of the required size. It is suitable for packing sections of 3 to 20 mm, shaft diameters of 10 to 140 mm, and comes boxed with full instructions. DSM Elastomers confirms closing date for Chiba plant The Board of the EPDM production joint venture DSM–Idemitsu (DIC) has announced that it will close its EPDM plant in Chiba, Japan by the end of September. This follows an earlier announcement from DSM that it is rationalizing its current EPDM activities. The company will continue to serve EPDM Keltan customers in Asia with a full range of products manufactured in Geleen, The Netherlands and Triunfo, Brazil. In 2003, DSM Elastomers inaugurated 4

a completely new EPDM production unit in Geleen with an annual capacity of 80 kt. The new facility is now fully operational and delivers the expected volume of product. Almost all customers have reapproved the new products, and phase-out plans for the Japanese plant are in place. Contact: DSM Elastomers BV, PO Box 43, 6130 AA Sittard, The Netherlands.
