INDUSTRY NEWS AC-Lak gets final approval for powder paint plant AC-Lak (Liberec, Czech Republic), material surface finish company, got the final approval for a new powder paint plant in the Industrial Zone in Liberec-South on 5 Sep 2002. The plant is a joint venture between the investment fund LIF (Liberec, Czech Republic) and Zetka (Bakov nad Jizerou, Czech Republic). DuPont coatings branching out DuPont Coatings is poised to venture into industrial markets including powder and liquid coatings for piping in the refining industry. The company is designing coatings with antimicrobials for hygienic applications. Govesan recalls powder coating Woodbury, MN-based Govesan America Corp has been ordered to recall its powder coatings sold as heavy-metal-free. PPG’s Fast Flash process cuts drying time and energy costs PPG has unveiled Fast Flash process claimed to reduce flashoff time for automotive coatings by 80% and energy cost by twothirds. Fast Flash process cuts flash-off time to 45 seconds from 4-11 minutes for high solids waterborne basecoats and to 90 seconds when utilized with PPG’s powder clearcoat. The process, which also eliminates pinholes and popping, provides 50% cost savings for the 90-second process and 75% for the 45second process. European Paint and Resin News, Aug 2002, 40 (8), 12-13

Akzo Nobel moves paint management from Sweden Akzo Nobel recently decided to relocate the management of its paints production for industry from Malmo, Sweden, to the UK and Germany. Earlier in 2002 it sold its printing ink operation that was being run from Trelleborg. Although Sweden has held a strong position within the Akzo Nobel organization for some time it now seems that activities in Sweden are being reduced more and more at the same time as the company is considering leaving the Stockholm stock exchange because of lack of interest from Swedish investors. Akzo Nobel claims that the move from Malmo is a reorganization aimed at generating internal synergies and involves only the relocation of management with around 10 employees. Strong industrial growth in India While the Indian decorative paint industry is still showing lacklustre

New powder coatings joint venture in Mexico Akzo Nobel Coatings has announced the purchase of a 50% stake in the leading Mexican powder coatings producer, Industrial de Acabados, SA de CV, (INDA). The new joint venture company, Akzo Nobel INDA SA de CV, will manufacture and market powder coatings products under the global “Interpon” powder coatings brand from the existing INDA facilities in Monterrey, Mexico. The general manager of Akzo Nobel’s powder coatings unit, Bill McPherson, said that many of their international customers have located their manufacturing in Mexico and the Akzo Nobel global strategy is to supply customers with the powder coatings products and services that they need, wherever they operate. INDA is a pioneer company in the powder coatings industry in Mexico and the association with Akzo Nobel will help them in servicing their current customer base with new products and permit growth in a wider spectrum of market segments.
