Nirma (which specializes in chemical products and detergents) is to invest $22 M in increasing its sodium carbonate capacity in Gujarat, India from 420,000 to 650,000 tonnes/y. Sodium carbonate is an important raw material for detergents and in 2001 Nirma used 80% of its production in house.

Cussons seeks to acquire local brands Cussons India Pvt Ltd (Cussons), a part of UK-based Paterson Zochonis group of companies, plans to acquire an Indian soap brand to make inroads into distribution in India. The acquired brand would be cheaper than its existing brand Imperial Leather, which is the major product in the company’s portfolio. Cussons product comprises of soap and talc under the Imperial Leather brand. Imperial Leather soap comes in White, Original and Gold variants while its talc comes in Original, Floral and Gold variants. Cussons has given sub-contract to manufacture its soaps to VVF Ltd while the distribution in the western region is assigned to the Mumbaibased Vardhaman Chemicals Ltd. Karnataka Government yet to identify buyers for KS&DL The Karnataka Government has not yet identified the buyer of its 80-year old Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Ltd (KS&DL), which has a turnover of Rup 1.16 bn. The Government proposes to divest 74% of its stake in 3
