New Turbidity Meter New from Tintometer Limited is a really reliable and accurate Turbidity Meter--an important addition to the Lovibond ® range of high quality water analysis systems. In fact, not one but two state-of-the-art Turbidity Meters are on offer; one portable, the other intended primarily for laboratory use. Both instruments are true nephelometers and use a patented 'Solid Optical Geometry', so the user never needs to be concerned with making adjustments to the numerous precision optical elements, other than normal lamp replacement. Competitive instruments cannot match up to the ease of Standardization--just one adjustment compensates 46

all ranges, thereby eliminating potential errors and ensuring accurate, rapid test results. Another important feature is the horizontal light path, which avoids the problems commonly associated with settlement of particulate matter. Silicon photodiodes are employed as the detectors, ensuring consistent accurate results, regardless of the ambient temperature. Any Turbidity Meter worthy of the name should also utilize a 'Ratio Method' of signal processing ensuring a linear response over a broad range. The Lovidbond ~ Portable Turbidity Meter TM720 is the ideal instrument for on-site testing, but its accuracy will lend itself equally well to laboratory use. Fully portable, with a rechargeable battery enabling up to 4~ hours of continuous operation, the instrument features two ranges, (0-20 NTU and 0-200 NTU) and a digital display. Weighing in at just 2.5 kg in a sturdy ABS

carrying case, the instrument is supplied complete with spare cuvettes and a 0.1 NTU reference standard. For laboratory use, the TM750 offers four ranges; 0-1, 0-10, 0-100, and 0-1000 NTU with a large digital display. It has an excellent response to turbidity change in coloured liquids, with a linearity of + 1% of full scale. Areas of application include potable and waste water treatment, environmental analysis, liquid fuels, food and drug processing, industrial process liquids etc, etc. Filter backwash operations can also benefit greatly from the scientific approach offered by the use of a reliable accurate turbidity meter.

World Research Database on C D - R O M Longman/Microinfo have just published a World Research Database on CD-ROM. Over 20 000 research establishments in more than 150 countries are listed and described in the 'Research Centres' database included on the disc. Information given includes full name (original language and English); telephone, telex and fax numbers, affiliation, areas of expertise and product range, names and departments of senior staff, annual budget, activities, publications, research links with companies or governments. A second database featured on the disc is an international 'Who's Who' in Science and Technology. This lists some 49 000 individuals with names, job titles and address information. Around 25 000 entries include: qualifications, previous professional experience, ~urrently held directorships, published works, main professional research interests etc. Not only do senior staff include laboratory directors or chairmen but also heads of departments or specific programme directors. All areas of science and technology are represented. Both databases are updated continuously by Longman Group UK; new replacement CDs will be issued to subscribers at 6-monthly intervals.

Special features of the CD-ROM system include the facility to print down selected name and address files direct to computer labels. This makes the Longman/ Microinfo World Research Database of particular benefit to direct mail and other marketing organizations. Longman/Microinfo World Research Database is also a unique tool for reference libraries and similar information users. In addition it has the potential to assist a number of organizations with affiliated interests such as universities, companies or corporate bodies seeking to compare or assess research programmes from like-minded or competitive organizations. Science and technology publishers, conference organizers, embassies and trade associations will also find the database to be of considerable value. Longman currently uses these databases to generate a substantial series of printed directories which as a collection cost in excess of £3000. The much more manageable and fully machine readable CD-ROM version will be available on annual subscription at £2000 with an introductory offer price of £ 1600 for all annual subscriptions entered before 31 March 1991.

Enhanced Strip Chart Recorders An enhanced range of strip chart recorders has been introduced by ABB Kent-Taylor to complete the Company's new family of 'X' designated recorders and controllers. Following the recent launch of its PX105 circular chart recorders and MX Controllers, ABB Kent-Taylor has redesigned its former P100M and P600M strip chart recorders under the new designations--PX100 for continuous writing recorders and PX600 for six-point dotted versions. Whereas many of the proven existing designs concepts have been retained in these microprocessorcontrolled instruments, they have been augmented by improved technology and a radial upgrade in mechanical design. The PX6000 design, for example, includes a high torque printing mechanism which, coupled with digital positional control of all functions of the pen turret and a new continuous self-referencing routine significantly enhances the instrument's ability to operate in the most extreme industrial environments. Cool running conditions and a wide tolerance of supply voltage variations have been achieved through switched mode power supplies which dramatically increase the rejection of line-induced electrical noise. Tactile response of membrane switches ease of programming and the bright dot matrix display which can be used to reprogramme for a different application, has the unique facility to switch from bar graph to digital mode when an alarm occurs. The PX100 provides one, two or three continuous coloured traces, whilst the PX600 provides up to six dotted traces in different colours. Both instruments have a recording accuracy of +0.3% of span. The instruments will accept all standard inputs from resistance thermometers, thermocouples and a whole range of flow devices, as well as voltage and current signals.
