CERTIFICATION FOR PEDIATRIC NURSES PLANNED
n
In response to a demand from individuals, as well as employing agencies, for a pediatric nursing certification program, and because of the need for competency validation in nursing specialties, the National Board of PNPlAs conducted an assessment of needs by means of a questionnaire mailed to 15,000 general pediatric nurses. More than 3000 nurses responded, with most stating there is a need for such a certification process and also indicating they would participate in such a National Board offering. Since the National Board has expertise and success in providing pediatric certification that fosters quality health care to children, the Board has written a proposal to begin a general pediatric nursing certification process. Currently the National Board is seeking funding for the project while organizing a task force of pediatric nursing experts who will begin to set the certification criteria through a role delineation study followed by content and examination development. The first examination offering is tentatively planned for 1990. The membership organizations represented on the National Board (NAPNAP, AAP, and AFPNPAP) have approved of this expansion and direction. m CERTIFICATION MAINTENANCE PROGRAM UPDATE
