Meeting of the General Board The General Board of the EPNS held its second meeting this year in Dfisseldorf, from 27 to 29 November, chaired by Paul Casaer. There were also separate meetings of the Subcommittees on Training, chaired by Brian Neville and on Bylaws, chaired by Jan Rotteveel, in close coordination with the Executive Board. Plans and proposals from the Executive Board and the Subcommittees were put to the General Board.

The main issues on the agenda were: • Constitution and Bylaws of EPNS • The training of future paediatric neurologists in Europe • The agenda for the forthcoming scientific congress in Nice (France).

Constitution and bylaws This issue was introduced by the president. After a good and lively discussion there was unanimous agreement that EPNS should take an active interest in all aspects of paediatric neurology in Europe, including the training programme for future paediatric neurologists with one of the ultimate aims being to establish a unified standard in training. To achieve this it will be necessary to represent paediatric neurology at the level of the European Union. Such representation exists for most medical specialties, including paediatrics and neurology. Authority to speak for paediatric neurology as a whole would require steady consultation with, and authorization from, paediatric neurology societies in the European region. To represent European paediatric neurology at the level of the European Union EPNS should have

a mandate from the regional societies for paediatric neurology. It was felt that this purpose would be best served by the creation of an advisory committee in which the European paediatric neurology societies would be represented as members.

Training in paediatric neurology The Training Committee chaired by Brian Neville has agreed to propose minimum requirements for training. Other issues presently under consideration are feasibility of an exit examination, and cooperation with European Academy of Childhood Disability (EACD) in the field of training. A green paper will be worked out by the training committee carrying proposals to the General Board.

East European members The need for close cooperation has been stressed. A meeting with representatives of Eastern European countries will take place during the general EPNS meeting in Nice, 7-11 November 1999, to be organized by Paolo Curatolo.

Membership and financial situation The treasurer, Dietz Rating, reported that EPNS has now 330 members, 20 of whose membership duties are considerably overdue. Measures to deal with this were considered. A financial committee to assist the treasurer will consist of Dr Boltshauser (Switzerland), Dr Lipinski (Germany) and an external accountant.
