BT&D Queen's Award for Export Exports representing 85% of total sales, and a year on year growth of 25% have won BT&D Technologies (BT&D and DuPont, Ipswich, UK) the Queen's Award for E x p o r t Achievement. Since the first components were produced in 1987 BT&D has established an international reputation for product quality and innovation, and now exports over 140,000 components for usc in telecom and datacom networks to 28 countries throughout the world. Primary export markets are Scandinavia, Germany and the USA, with new ones emerging in Japan, Korea and the Asian Pacific rim.

"Our philosophy from the outset was to establish BT&D as a world leader in optoelectronic component industry, concentrating on export business and servicing it from the largest cleanroom in Europe specifically designed for optoelectronic com pon ent manufacturing," said Paul Engle, MD of BT&D. "It says a great deal for the hard work of everybody at BT&D that this has been achieved in less than five years, and that their efforts have been recognised in the granting of this prestigious Award. Nikko K yodo Company Limited (formerly Nippon Mining Co., Ltd) has announced its plan for building a new production facility for compound semiconductor materials at the Isohara Plant, located in Kita-Ibaraki City, Ibaraki Prefecture, northeast of Tokyo, Japan. Nikko Kyodo Co., Ltd. currently manufactures compound semiconductor materials on the premises of Central Research Laboratories in Toda city, Saitama Prefecture. The I s o h a r a Pl ant is N i k k o Kyodo's manufacturing centre for electronics and specialty metal pro~ ducts such as refractory metal spub termg targets and ITO sputtering targets. It also manufactures high purity metals such as high purity In, Cd and Te. The plant covers 265,000 m in area. The manufacturing of compound semiconductor materials at the Isohara Plant will start from October 1993, whilst manufacturing at the current facility in Toda will continue until March 1994. The new volume of production will result in a more stable delivery of products, says the company, plus an improvement of quality and uniformity of products. "Due to the completion of consistent quality control through integrated manufacturing processes from high purity metals as starting materials to single crystal compound semiconductor material substrates, this improvement in our product will be achieved." Nippon Mining Co., Ltd merged with its subsidiary, Kyodo Oil Co., Ltd a petroleum sales company, in December 1992, and its current name is Nikko Kyodo Co., Ltd. However, it will adopt a new name within 1993.
