On the ISAPS ’07 in Nikko

The Sixth International Symposium on Applied Plasma Science (ISAPS ’07) was held at the NIKKO KANAYA HOTEL, in Nikko, Japan on September 24 through 28, 2007. The selected papers presented at ISAPS ’07 were rewritten after the symposium. Those were peer refereed and are compiled in this special issue of Vacuum. 1. About ISAPS The International Symposium on Applied Plasma Science (ISAPS) is held every 2 years to promote international collaboration in Applied Plasma Sciences. The 1st International Symposium on Applied Plasma Science (ISAPS ’97) had been held at UCLA, Los Angeles, in USA in September 1997, on the occasion of the 5th anniversary of the Institute of Applied Plasma Science (IAPS), which was established in 1993. The 2nd International Symposium on Applied Plasma Science (ISAPS ’99) was held at the OSAKA SUN PALACE in Osaka, Japan, during September 20–24, 1999. The 3rd International Symposium on Applied Plasma Science (ISAPS ’01) was held at the WHEDGEWOOD RESORT in Alaska, USA, during July 2–6, 2001. The 4th International Symposium on Applied Plasma Science (ISAPS ’03) was held at the RIHGA ROYAL HOTEL KYOTO in Kyoto, Japan, during September 1–5, 2003, having about 100 delegates. In this event we celebrated the 10th anniversary of the IAPS. And the latest one, the 5th International Symposium on Applied Plasma Science, ISAPS ’05 was held at the HIRO HAWAIIAN HOTEL in Hawaii, during September 26–30, 2005, having over 60 delegates. This time, the 6th International Symposium, ISAPS ’07 has been held in Nikko, during September 24 – 28, 2007. This year, 2007 is just the 15th anniversary of the IAPS. Those symposiums were sponsored by the IAPS. In the previous ISAPS, more than 60 people from all over the world: USA, UK, Poland, Germany, Austria, Ukraine, Turkey, India, Malaysia, China, Japan and so on, participated in the symposium. The proceedings were published by IAPS as ADVANCES IN APPLIED PLASMA SCIENCE (Vols. 1–5), for every symposium. The topics of ISAPS focused mainly on plasma applications, including plasma sources, propulsion, various plasma processings, applications to environmental problems, applications in microelectronics, and also contained applications of other high-energy sources, such as electron, ion, and laser beams. Then, the symposium covered a wide range of interdisciplinary scientific activities in the fields of energy, mechanical, electrical, material, and chemical sciences. These books contain all the papers, which were presented at each ISAPS. 2. Summary of ISAPS ’07 This symposium ISAPS ’07 was held in Nikko, Japan. Nikko is one of the traditional cities, the Japanese famous sightseeing spots, and 0042-207X/$ – see front matter Ó 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. doi:10.1016/j.vacuum.2008.03.069

located 150 km north from Tokyo. Shrines and Temples of Nikko were constructed in Tokugawa Era about 400 years ago, and this area which is a natural park was registered as World Heritage site. More information on Nikko can be obtained from the web site of http://www.nikko-jp.org/english/index.html. We had a good weather during conference; so, participants might have obtained a great impression about this attractive city. The NIKKO KANAYA HOTEL, the conference place, is located 1.5 km from Nikko Station. This hotel is at riverside, and Nikko Toshogu Shrine is located on the other side of the river. Also it is located in very convenient surroundings near downtown area. The registration desk was opened at NIKKO KANAYA HOTEL (especially for Foreigners). It was convenient for the participants that the rooms of the hotel were available as the accommodation for ISAPS ’07. The 6th symposium which was organized by the Organizing Committee of ISAPS ’07 was sponsored by the IAPS in cooperation with PSTI (Plasma Science and Technology Institute) at UCLA, JWRI (Joining and Welding Research Institute) at Osaka University, IRS (Institute of Space Systems) at University of Stuttgart, Dalian University of Technology and IPP at Kharkov Institute of Physics and Technology. The topics of ISAPS ’07 presentations focus mainly on plasma applications, including applications in microelectronics and application to environmental problems, as well as applications of other high-energy sources, such as electron, ion and laser beams. Participants in this symposium cover a wide range of interdisciplinary scientific activities in the fields of energy, mechanical, electrical, material and chemical sciences. A 100 people attended the ISAPS ’07 from all over the world, including 40 overseas attendees from USA, Germany, Poland, Turkey, China, India, Australia, etc. Of course, there were many participants from Japan, including a lot of members of IAPS, which sponsored this symposium. About 80 presentations were presented at the ISAPS ’07. The participants must share their thoughts to establish strong connections with each other. Those papers were compiled in the conference proceedings, entitled ADVANCES IN APPLIED PLASMA SCIENCE, Vol. 6, 2007, prior to the symposium. The symposium was opened on September 24 afternoon by a short greeting from the Symposium Chairman, Prof. A. Kobayashi at Osaka University, and Co-chair Prof., Y. Arakawa at the University of Tokyo. The followed Plenary Session had four presentations on the research topics related to Applied Plasma Science and Plasma Applications. The brief schedule of ISAPS ’07 during September 24–28 is shown in Table 1. The following events were carried out during the symposium.

2.1. Oral Session and Poster Session After the Plenary Session, 46 general presentations were continuously begun from Session A to Session J, related on various plasma applications. Poster Session was held for 3 days as Poster Session I–III from September 24 to 28, which had 28 poster presentations. There were many questions and answers and discussions about the content of those presentations by the participants who had different specialties in this interdisciplinary scientific field of Applied Plasma Science. The following research topics in this symposium were distributed into each Session.

(6) Advanced materials (high heat resistant materials, composite, biomaterials, etc.) (7) Characterization and evaluation of materials (8) Industrial applications of directed energy sources (e-beams, ion beams, lasers) The program of the ISAPS ’07 shows the detail of these presentations. Totally, 78 presentations were made about the research results on plasma applications, including applications to environmental problems, and also containing applications of other high-energy sources, such as electron, ion, and laser beams. Sixty-nine papers presented at the ISAPS ’07 were compiled in the proceedings before the symposium. The selected papers among them were rearranged and rewritten and contributed in this journal: ‘‘Vacuum’’ by Elsevier Science Ltd. after the symposium, as another proceedings. Each paper was peer reviewed by 2 referees and accepted after the revision of the manuscript. Consequently, 51 papers including 9 technical notes are contributed in this special issue of Vacuum. The readers will be able to know the content of the ISAPS ’07 in this issue. I believe that the research topics contained in this book are expected to enhance new international collaborations in the relevant research field. The last day morning, on September 28, the panel discussion on Applied Plasma Science, was held, and we discussed about Applications of Plasma Science and other high-energy sources, advanced materials and characterization, and related applied sciences; we also discussed the various problems about which the panelists pointed out.

2.2. Other events (1) Plasma production, diagnostics, properties: modeling and simulations (2) Plasma propulsion: energy applications (3) Plasma process and its efficiency: advanced plasma processing (4) Plasma processing (surface modification, deposition, thermal spray, etc.) (5) Plasma applications to environmental problems

Reception was held in the evening on September 24 at the same hotel. About 50 people joined and introduced each other and enjoyed talking and small dinner. During the conference, the participants had lunch altogether at the same room, therefore, they had a lot of conversation and friendly talk at the lunchtime, same as the optional dinnertime, and the coffee break every day. was held at the same hotel on September 26, Wednesday evening. Seventy people attended and had a lot of fun together. As Excursion, walking tour to Traditional Shrine (Toshogu Shrine) in Nikko was conducted in the afternoon of September 25. Also a short trip to Kegon fall and Chuzenji lake was arranged in the afternoon of September 28 as a group tour after the conference. There were a lot of interesting places for sightseeing in the surroundings. People had a good time with a good impression on the great historical culture. Thus, ISAPS ’07 finished successfully. Participants in the symposium interacted with each other and discussed a wide range of interdisciplinary scientific activities during the conference. ISAPS ’07 was fruitful for all attendees to continue future collaborations and also continue next ISAPS. The picture shown in Fig. 1 was taken, when the participants joined altogether at the conference room on Wednesday, September 26, 2007. We hope this symposium will lead to further developments in Applied Plasma Science. Also, we expect that this special issue will enhance future collaborations amongst researchers in the field. ISAPS ’07 was supported by the following foundations: The Inoue Foundation for Science, the Iwatani Naoji Foundation, and
