THE accelerating effect of acetic, butyric, caproic and capric acids on the breakdown of tert-butyl hydroperoxide was studied in the presence of VO(acac)2. The increase in the rate of radical formation is due to the formation of a complex VO(acac)2•ROOH.2R'COOH that breaks down readily, and to the accelerated regeneration of the active form of the catalyst. A STUDYof the physical, chemical and extractive properties of a new extracting agent (4-hydroxymethyl-l,3-dioxolane) for aromatic hydrocarbons in the temperature range of 20°-70°C, showed that it surpasses the industrial extracting agent - diethylene glycol and may be used for extractive separation, both in the pure form and as additive to other solvents, with increased dissolving power, but lower selectivity. A MIXTUREof dimethyl- and methylethyl-naphthalenes(C~ ~-C~2) was separated using a capillary column coated with XE-60 (efficiency > 150,000 theoretical plates). Retention indices of all C11-C~ 2 alkylnaphthalenes were measured. A diagrammatic method for differentiating the selectivity of various stationary liquid phases was evaluated using the alkylnaphthalene retention data obtained with this column.
