Obituary
Professor Dr. Nikolai Markovich Emanuel (1915-1984) Professor N.M. Emanuel, Associate Editor of this journal, died unexpectedly in Moscow on 8th December, 1984, in his 70th year. He was an outstanding Soviet scientist in the field of chemical physics and physico-chemical biology; an excellent scientific organizer; member of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences of the U.S.S.R.; Head of the Division of General and Technical Chemistry of the same Academy. For his outstanding scientific achievements he was awarded the Lenin Prize and the State Prize of the U.S.S.R. Professor Emanuel played a prominent role in the progress of the theory of chain reactions, polymer stabilization, kinetics and mechanisms of some, basic biological processes, as well as in the development of some new drugs. His work provided excellent proof of the predictions he had formulated 25 years ago regarding the unlimited perspectives in the use of methods and concepts of chemical physics and chemical kinetics in fundamental research and biomedical applications. Professor Emanuel was known as the founder and leading person of the biophysical trend in the biology of aging for the Soviet gerontologists. He focussed his scientific interest on the development of quantitative kinetic methods in gerontology, and of experimental delay of the aging process. For this latter purpose he suggested the use of some synthetic antioxidants, i.e., scavengers of the harmful oxygen radicals in order to control the rate of lipid peroxidation in the cellular membranes. He considered one of the main tasks of his research activity to develop new geroprotective drugs in the hope that they will be able to delay the rate of human aging and to extend the active life span. Professor Emanuel was the leader of a scientific school. His merits were honoured by memberships in a number of scientific societies. He edited or was a member of the Editorial Boards of several Soviet and international journals. He was also a m e m b e r of the Scientific Council on Gerontology and Geriatrics of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the U.S.S.R. He also headed the All-Union Workshop on the ' F u n d a m e n t a l Problems of the Biology of Aging'. He frequently attended international congresses devoted to gerontology and cancer in the capacity of organizer or speaker. Those who had the opportunity to meet him and collaborate with him admired his excellent erudition, his enthusiasm for research and his enormous energy for this work. He was able to combine the exigency toward himself and his co-workers with profound humanity, solicitousness and a genuine concern for people.
