AVK presents 2012 Innovation Awards GERMAN REINOFRCED plastics association AVK presented its 2012 Innovation Awards to six winners during its annual conference in Düsseldorf. Once again, the AVK conference was the prelude to the COMPOSITES EUROPE trade fair on 9-11 October. The AVK awards were presented in five categories. The winners are listed below. In the Innovative Products/Applications category, Gummiwerk KRAIBURG GmbH & Co KG, and its partners Medi GmbH & Co KG and C-Matrixx Carbontechnik
GmbH, won for the medi panthera CF I prosthetic foot. Fraunhofer IFAM (Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials) won the Innovative Processes/Methods category for development of the FlexPLAS® release film which makes it possible to manufacture large composite components without the use of release agents. The film has been used to manufacture large carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) components, without using release agents, via a prepreg process at 180°C in an autoclave.
The components can then be coated without further pre-treatment. In the Research/Science category, there were two winners: the Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research Dresden, and its partner Nanocyl SA, for the in-situ structural monitoring of glass fibre reinforced plastics; and the University of Bayreuth for the
French Prime Minister, Jean-Marc Ayrault, and Airbus President and CEO, Fabrice Brégier, have officially inaugurated the A350 XWB Final Assembly Line (FAL), in Toulouse, France. The 74,000 m² FAL will employ some 1,500 people who will build up to 10 A350 XWB aircraft a month from 2018. The A350 XWB structure is 53% composite-based, including major elements such as wings and fuselage. From January 2013, the SP-High Modulus brand will no longer be used and all of the company’s composite products and services will be marketed globally under the Gurit brand. Gurit acquired composite engineering and materials company High Modulus of New Zealand in 2009, combining it with Gurit’s SP brand to create a stronger presence in the boat building market.

To broaden its product offering, Premier Composite Technologies (PCT), a Dubai-based supplier of composite components for the architectural market, has launched a new Glass Reinforced Concrete (GRC) and Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC) division. PCT believes these cement-based materials will appeal to designers who require an alternatives to polymer composites. This expansion, combined with PCT’s existing technology for engineering and building with advanced composite materials, will allow the company to offer a total solutions portfolio to the market. Speciality chemicals company Momentive has opened a new global research and development centre and business headquarters for the India, Middle East and Africa (IMEA) region in Bangalore, India. The India, Middle East and Africa region represents one of the fast-growing regions for Momentive, and is projected to be a key growth area for the company in the future. US headquartered Momentive Specialty Chemicals is a global producer of thermoset resins.

A special award recognised the Successful Implementation of FRP Procedures in Small Companies. This went to polyGLAS Weirather GmbH and its partner Lange + Ritter for the production of large components using the RTM Light process in order to reduce emissions. And finally, Lamilux Heinrich Strunz GmbH won the Exceptionally Attractive FRP Employer category.
In brief Building on their expertise in the sports and motorsports sector, Renault and the Caterham Group are joining forces to develop future sports vehicles. The companies plan to build models in large and small series. The objective for each company is to launch its own vehicle within the next three to four years. The new vehicles will be built at the Renault Alpine plant in Dieppe in France, the home of the Alpine brand.

Northrop Grumman signs F-35 agreement with Danish manufacturer NORTHROP GRUMMAN Corporation has entered a long-term agreement (LTA) with Terma AS of Denmark to manufacture composite parts for the international F-35 Lightning II fighter aircraft programme. The deal could be worth more than $97 million upon completion of all follow-on options.
solidified the collaborative relationship between Northrop Grumman and Terma, which has manufacturing responsibility for hardware on all three F-35 aircraft variants.
The agreement covers production of 34 unique F-35 Lightning II composite components, including door, panel, skin assembly and straps, through 2019. The LTA further strengthens the partnership between Northrop Grumman and Terma, which began in 2006.
As a principal member of the Lockheed Martin-led F-35 industry team, Northrop Grumman performs a significant share of the work required to develop and produce the aircraft, including producing the F-35 centre fuselage. In 2011, the company delivered 22 centre fuselages and is on track to deliver 32 centre fuselages this year. It will make its 100th delivery in early 2013.
