CAD in industry Norwegian graphicssystem A graphics system that supports IBM graphics standards on a single PC format interface card has been launched by the Norwegian company Rasterex AS. The system is currently aimed at the European market only. The system consists of the RPB40.8 processor board, which can be installed on any IBM PC-compatible computer, connected to a 15 in monitor, the RCM450. The board provides a resolution of 720 x 512 pixels in either 16 or 256 colours simultaneously from a palette of 256000. Because of the programmable hardware developed by Rasterex for the system, the different IBM graphics standards - CGA, EGA and PGA - can be put into the package. The Rasterex card automatically detects the mode of operation and sends the appropriate information to

the monitor. The use of the TI GSP chip, the TMS34010, provides on-chip interfacing, timing and control for both local memory and CRT (cathode ray tube) display. It also provides up to 6 MIPS (million instructions/s) performance, which is translated into graphics performance using the dual-ported video RAMs (random access memory) (512 kbyte) for the onboard display memory, in addition to 1 Mbyte of DRAM (dynamic random access memory) for program and data storage. The VRAM (video random access memory) can be software configured to give four planes of 1024 x 1024. The total system, including the 16 colour version of the RPB40.4 card and RCM540 colour monitor with drivers for CGA, EGA and EGAt is

R CM540 colour monitor from Rasterex AS £1995, and with the 256 colour version of the card is £2385. Other options (e.g. GKS to DGIS driver and CGI to DGIS driver) are available.

Telestar 386 workstation for CADCAM,CAE,AEC and AI The US-based company TeleVideo Systems Inc. has launched the Telestar 386 engineering workstation. The Telestar 386 is designed for CADCAM, CAE, architecture and electronic construction and artificial intelligence applications. It uses the Intel 80386 microprocessor and 10 MHz 80387 floating point processor. It features high resolution 19 in monochrome and 17 in colour monitors, both of which provide resolutions of 1280 x 1024 pixels. The colour monitor allows display of 256 colours from a palette of 4096 colours. Telestar

386 includes 4 Mbyte of RAM, expandable to 16 Mbyte, and supports eight I/O slots, two 32-bit slots and six IBM AT-compatible 8/16-bit slots, 40, 71 or 300 Mbyte of hard disk and a 60 Mbyte tape streamer. Telestar 386 incorporates Microport's DOSMerge/386 for concurrent UNIX V.3 and DOS operation. It features an onboard Ethernet interface and also supports the industry standard user interface system X Windows from MIT. Prices range from £3995 for an entry level, discless mode workstation

to £15995 for the 300 Mbyte workstation with 17 in colour monitor.

Guide to flat panel displays published Stanford Resources has published a 250 page guide to flat panel displays, with the aim of providing engineering managers with information needed to make a cost effective display choice for their particular application. It is called 'Flat panel displays - a users guide'. The report begins by reviewing display technologies, those covered including liquid crystal, electroluminescent, plasma panels, vacuum fluorescent, smart LED arrays, flat CRTs and electrochromic. It then looks at

display product specifications, prices and cost issues, integrated circuit drivers for flat panel displays, and display vendor profiles. A list of flat panel display suppliers is given at the end. There are over 60 tables and 25 figures. The report costs $495.
