Book Reviews
Vacuum Technology, by A. Roth; published by North Holland Publishing Co., Amsterdam, 1976; pp. xiv + 496; price Dfl. 135.-; ISBN 0-7204-0313-8 This b o o k results from a postgraduate course given by the author at the Faculty of Engineering, Tel-Aviv University. It is intended as background reading for graduates and undergraduates and to serve as a h a n d b o o k for scientists and engineers. The author has achieved considerable success in his aims. There are seven chapters. Following a largely historical introduction there is a good survey of relevant rarefied gas theory. Gas flow in the three regimes of viscous, molecular and intermediate flow is well described. Physicochemical p h e n o m e n a are treated a little cavalierly -- in particular, the a t t e m p t to cover the interaction of electrons and ions with surfaces in seven pages is somewhat optimistic. However, the production of low pressures and their measurement provide t w o interesting and informative chapters. Finally there is an account of the technology of high vacua, covering the selection of materials, cleansing and sealing techniques and leak detection. The b o o k is clearly written and copiously illustrated. It contains enough data to be extremely useful to engineers whilst being sufficiently detailed in description and theory to be suitable for teaching. The literature is cited to 1974; there are subject and author indexes. It is a pity that it is too expensive for many individuals to b u y -- its price (about £30) is quite prohibitive for students. Certainly this is a b o o k for the institutional library and the vacuum laboratory shelf. J.P.G.F.
