DUCTNEWS Magneticfilters for liquidsand powders The new range of magnetic filters designed by Eriez Magnetics have improved performance and expanded applications, the company says. The magnetic filter consists of a core containing a matrix which is magnetically induced. The new filters possess very high magnetic gradients and result in an increase in the magnetic attractive force. Now even paramagnetic (feebly magnetic) contaminants can separated. Eriez has designed two new types of filters for the handling of wet and dry materials. Firstly, electromagnetic filters: these consist of a solenoid encased in steel. The coil generates a uniform magnetic field throughout the bore. Packed in the bore of the coil is a stack of expanded metal discs (termed matrix) which become induced by the magnetic field. The matrix amplifies the magnetic field, produces localised regions of extremely high gradient and provides the collection sites for fine iron and paramagnetic particle capture. The slurry can be fed to either the top or the bottom of the filter. As the feed material filters through the matrix the magnetic contaminants are captured while the non-magnetic medium passes through. When the magnetic contaminants eventually build up on the matrix, the separator is de-energized and the matrix is flushed clean. The filters are rated by the magnetic field strength gen-

erated in the bore of the solenoid coil with the matrix removed. This background magnetic field represents the driving force that produces the amplified high gradient throughout the matrix. Filters are available with the background magnetic fields ranging up to 10000 gauss. The dry vibrating magnetic filter (D.V.F.) is specifically designed to remove very fine iron bearing contaminants from fine powders. The standard design is similar to the wet electromagnetic filter. However, to enhance the fluidity of the powder as it passes through the matrix the canister is attached to two low frequency, high amplitude vibratory drives. These drives deliver a strong vibratory action to the canister assembly resulting in a smooth and even flow of the product through the matrix grid. The filters generate background fields of 5000 gauss. Capacities based on fine powder flow up to 7kg per square centimetre of cross sectional area of matrix. A 150mm diameter is capable of treating up to 1200 kg per hour. Magnetic filters are used when processing ceramic slips and glazes, fine sand, glass powder and other finely divided industrial minerals. and chemicals such as ink and toner.

Oil mist filtrationsystemfor Europe The introduction of a UK designed oil mist filtration system for the Japanese market has led to a new development for British and European industry. The F3, which is the smallest model in the range of Filter-mist International’s extractor units, was developed to meet a demand in Japan. Now the F3 has been launched at the small end of the machine tool shop in the UK and Europe. The unit is capable of extracting oil mist laden air at three cubic metres per minute or 125 CFM. 22

The F3 can be mounted vertically or horizontally and is claimed to have proven in Japan that it can be successfully fitted to the small end of the machine tool range to eliminate oil mist pollution. The company believes it has a future in the UK and Europe in machine shop applications as well as press shops, confectionary manufacturing, rubber and plastics machinery and glass finishing.
