771061 NON-STEADY G R O U ~ A T E R FLOWS IN A S~I-CONFINED

A~JIFER S~11me/lJ er; JB Soils Found, V16, N3, Sept 1976, P33-50 This flow which can cause consolidation amd free s~rface lowering has been studied analytically. Since the main effect of consolidation takes place before noticeable lowering of the free surface, each phenomenon can be solved separately, and the real solution obtained by superposition. However the solution for lowering of the free surface is delayed due to the consolidation by a certain time lapse, depending on the plane coordinates. 771062 INSTRUMENT FOR MEASI~RING QUANTITIES OF MOISTURE MOVING INTO A FREEZING ROCK SAMPLE (IN RUSSIAN) Vasilik, I N Paper to All-Unlon Conference on Soil Cryogendcs and the Amelioration of Cold Soils ard Permafrost, Pushchino, Oct 1975. Proceedings, Moscow, Nauka, 1975, P233-238 771063 IMPROVING THE PERFORMANCE OF VERTICAL DRAINS I~

PEAT (IN RUSSIA~)

Shaposhnlkov, M A Trarmp Stroit, N3, March 1976, P41-42 Considers chemically active admixtures for sand drains to improve the water permeability of peat.

The law is incorporated in a technique for calculating the stresses and deformations in fissured rock using the finite element method. The technique is applied to 2 experimental adits of the Wagerberg tunnel amd good agreement with measured data is obtained. A second example is given.

Mines 771065 NOTES ON THE RECOVERY OPERATIONS IN A VERTICAL SHAFT DAMAGED BY GROUND MOVEMERT Williams, A W Ass Min Mgrs S Afr Circ, NS, 8 Nov 1976, 7P Damage to the shaft occurred over some 15m in the vicinity of 43 level, probably caused by tectonic stress readjustment either in the shaft area or transmitted there through an existing fault plane. The paper concentrates on recovery operations. 771066 OPEN PIT MINE AT ASBESTOS HILL (PART OF THE ASBESTOS HILL-NORDENHAM STORY) Roussin, R CIM Bull, V69, N775, Nov 1976, P70-74 Concentrates on operations at this Quebec mine

in the permafroe% re~ion. The pit will ultimately be 2300feet long by i000 feet at the widest point. A pit slope stability st%zly, not discussed in t h i s article, indicated that wall stability could be maintained at 60-70 degrees by pre shearir~ •

771067 ENGINEERING AND TECHNICAL SERVICES DEPARI%~T (PART OF ~ E A m ~ S Hna-~Om~nmAM ~ X ) Trepander, M L CIM Bull, V69, N775, Nov 1976, I~5-91 Amongst other functions the Department is responsible for rock mechanics studies and monitoring for Thetford Mines and Asbestos Hill Mine. In this article foundations in ~ermafrost areas, open pit design, and wall control are included. 771068 REGIONAL ASPECTS AFFECT PLANNING OF SURFACE MINING OPERATIONS Coal Age, V81, N!0, Oct 1976, Pi19-141 Discusses factors affecting mining methods in 4 differing regions of the USA, ard considers the methods themselves in detail with their advantages and disadvantages; based on a study conducted for the US Bureau of Mines. 771069 DRILLING RECORD RAISE BORED S H ~ ; 12-FOOT •DIAMETER AND 2,300 FEET DEEP Kramer, W M; Magnus, V L Wld Min, V29, Nil, Oct 1976, P44-47 Reviews planning and execution of the project, a shaft through shale, sandy limestone, limestone, salty limestone amd salt, which was carried out in 3 stages. First an 8.75itch hole was drilled to total depth anl reamed to 13.75 inches, permitting i3.125inch drill pipe to be used; Second, surface installation and cellar, and firm] ly, reaming to full diameter using a Robbins 51R raise borer. Oilfield equipment was used for the pilot hole because of stringent deviation requirements. Overall time taken on the project was Just over 8 months, showing that raise boring can be a very competitive method of sinking edditional shafts. 771o7o IN-SEAM MINING HeT~herington, G A Min Engr, V135, N185, Ang-Sept 1976, F691-698 Presents an account of the changeover from conventional advance longwall mechanized mining to in-seam retreat methods, with substantial increases in production. Discusses face layout and design, conveyor system, roadhead support, manriding, and labour questions. 771071 FINITE ~k~-4ENT ANALYSIS OF A CIRCULAR OPENING IN JOIETED ROCK Mclntosh, I S M Sc thesis, Imperial CoLlege, OCt 1976, 146P A series of two-dimensional plane strain finite element aneAyses was conducted to investigate the effect of discontinuities on the stress distribution end deformations arouni a circular umdergroumd opening remote from the surface. Analyses using discrete and ubiquitous Joints were compared with available theoretical and linear elastic solutions. The effects of changes in material and Joint properties, Joint orientation, and vertical to horizontal load ratio on the stress distribution were studied.
