1o86 WILSON, JW Support of underground excavations in deep-level, hardrock mines: 2-tunnels and other non-tabular excavations. 7F,2T,6R. BULL. TRANS. A,V84, N821, APR. 1975, PA47- A53. A review of the support methods normally used to protect square-shaped tunnels and other non-tabular excavations in South African gold mines is given. This is followed by a discussion of the effects of these support methods and shaping on turn,el stability under stressed conditions. The theory of elasticity and observations of the physical conditions in tunnels located in deep hard-rock mines where various support systems are used, have beta used to define the stress limits to which the supports are effective. This study has highlighted the potential of bolting, meshing and lacing as a reinforcing support medium for highly stressed conditions. 1087 ANONYMOUS 65-foot-long rockbolts at New Brokan Hill. Figs. WORLD MINING,V28, N2, F ~ .1975,365. A short report of the use of 65 feet icing rockbolts which supply continuously acting support to t h e back of stopes, and s/low progressive mining through the reinforced sectlon of ore, is presented. 1088 BORECKI,M Stability of t h e w a l l of a circular shaft lining. In Polish. PRZEGL. GORN,V31, N1,JAN. 1975, P7-14. This theoretical paper deals with the basic problems of loading and stability of the circular shaft lining in modern pillarless mining of coal seams.
1089 CHLEBIK, J On the evaluation of the roof character. In Czech. TRANS. INST .MIN.METALL .OSTRAVA, MIN. GEOL. S ~ .V20,NI, 1974, P23-h7. By measuring the strength of strata associated with the roof of a longwall face with a Schmidt hsz~ner and by breakage of drill-core samples, the strata are classified into five groups. When this method was used at Cs. Armada Colliery, Karvina, the self-advancing supports being used in the working area were shown to be inadequate. 1090 KRASKKIN, IS Reaction between powered supports sad surrounding rock in difficult geological conditions. io91 KOLAR, J Contribution to the determination of t h e required face support resistance. In Czech. TRANS. INST .MIN.METALL .0STRAVA, MIN. GEOL. SHR .V .19,N3, 1973, P33 -h0. A method for the determination of support resistance in l o ~ u l l faces is presented and calculated values ere compared with measurements obtained in the OstravsKsrvina coalfield and in Polish Upper Silesia. An analogous method of ealeulatio~ is used to establish support resistance in dipping seams. 1092 MCNAY, LM COR SON, DR Hydraulic sandfill in deep metal mines. 30F. It is shown in this paper that increases in tunneller penetration rates alone will not result in increases in advance rates. It is considered that the greatest hope for the future lies in the concept of the total tunnelling system.
