The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) has announced the appointment of C. Wayne McIlwraith, BVSc (DVM), PhD, FRCVS as the next Vice President of the association. This appointment was disclosed in mid-August following the AAEP Board Meeting in Denver, CO. Dr. McIlwraith will be formally installed at the December 1998 AAEP Annual Convention in Baltimore, MD, and will begin his term in January 1999. A native of New Zealand, Dr. McIlwraith has been involved in the veterinary medical establishment since receiving his veterinary degree in New Zealand in 1970. He completed his surgical residency at Purdue University in 1977, and was board certified as Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1979. He is a member of the AAEP "On Call" program that contributes veterinary expertise for media coverage of major equine events. He is a recipient of a number of international honors, including being named a Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (London) in 1992 for meritorious contributions to learning in equine joint disease and joint surgery. He was the first veterinary orthopedic surgeon to receive the Tierklinik Hochmoor Award at the 10th Equitana Equine Veterinary Congress in Essen, Germany in 1993 for international contributions to equine orthopedics. He also received an honorary doctorate from the University of Vienna in 1995, the Schering Plough Award for Applied Equine Research from the World Equine Veterinary Association in Yokohama, Japan in 1995 and the John Hickman Award from the British Equine Veterinary Association in 1997 for outstanding contributions to orthopedics. Dr. McIlwraith is a member of the JEVS Editorial Board.
The World Equine Veterinary Association (WEVA) has issued a call for nominations for the biennial Schering-Plough Animal Health Equine Applied Research Award. The award recognizes outstanding research conducted in a specific field of applied equine science over the past five years. According to Dr. Peter J. Timoney, president of WEVA, the 1999 award will honor advances in the diagnosis and treatment of equine abdominal disease. This award will be presented at the WEVA Congress in Paris, Sept. 30 -Oct. 3. The recipient will receive a plaque and US$5,000, courtesy of Schering-Plough Animal Health Corporation, plus a US$1,000 travel allowance to attend the congress and present an oral and written summary of their work. Professional's Choice Sports Medicine Products, Inc., has introduced The Leg-Up Humanitarian Award, recognizing those in the equine industry who have given a "leg-up" to animals and/or riders in need and rewards humanitarian efforts. The first recipient of this award is Rainbows End, the only equine rescue and retirement facility in Hawaii (Makawao, Maui), founded by Julie Barraque. One of Rainbow Ends' long-term goals is to acquire a permanent facility for both permanent residents and those equines that need help temporarily for rehabilitation.

The winner will be selected by WEVA's Executive Committee and wdl be based on the recommendation of specialist referees.
