Equine Veterinary News from the Industry

The Animal Health Trust (AHT), in England, announced that after 10 very successful years as Director of the Animal Health Trust, Dr. Andrew Higgins has asked to step down at the end of the year. Dr. Higgins' resignation was received with regret by the Trust's Executive Committee, whose Chairman, Lord Fairhaven, commented: "Andrew Higgins has accomplished much in a decade, reversing the fortunes of the Trust and providing a real vision for the future. The redevelopment program at Lanwades Park has provided the Trust with a very exciting opportunity and the calibre of the scientists and veterinarians employed at AHT should ensure we remain in the vanguard of veterinary research worldwide. We will be very sorry to see him go but when his successor is appointed he or she will have a very sound base upon which to build." Varian Associates, Inc announced a powerful and efficient new method of extracting drugs of abuse from the urine of horses or other race animals. The new approach uses Bond Elut| Certify, a specially formulated sorbent that is tested for the recovery of NIDA (National Institute on Drug Abuse) specified basic and acidic drugs as part of its routine quality control. As a result, sorbent performance and specific analyte recovery are assured. With this new solid phase extraction method, recovery of a wide range of drugs (amphetamines, methamphetamines, barbiturates, PCP, codeine, morphine, fetanyl, clenbuterol, and steroids) from urine is typically 80-100 percent. The method also offers rapid flow rates for what is often a difficult sample to process due to its viscosity and clotting. The Food and Drug Administration has made available and is requesting comments on a draft level 1 Guidance for Industry titled "Professional Flexible Labeling of Antimicrobial Drugs (#66)."A notice was published in the Jan 22, 1998 Federal Register. This draft guidance provides specific guidance for drug sponsors on the development of professional flexible labeling for therapeutic veterinary prescription antimicrobial drugs. The Center for Veterinary Medicine intends to develop professional flexible labeling guidances specific to the various classes of therapeutic prescription products, e.g., antiparasitic, physiologics. Written comments should be submitted by April 22. The USDA's National Animal Health Monitoring System is conducting Equine '98, the first national study of equine health and management. Participants will be surveyed in spring 1998 by the National Agricultural Statistics Service. The study population will represent 78.4% of US horses and 78.1% of US locations with horses. Approximately 4,000 scientifically selected horse owners from 28 states will be contacted for the study. Results of Equine '98 will be used to estimate the prevalence of such problems as colic, lameness, infectious respiratory disease, and equine protozoal myeloencephalitis and to determine how many US horses are tested for equine infectious anemia; how many horses have equine influenza titers; and whether there is a seasonal aspect to Salmonella and parasite ova fecal shedding in horses.
