E n v i r o g e n Inc has been awarded a contract in excess of US$1 million to supply a fluidised bed reactor system to G e n c o r p A e r o j e t of Sacramento, California, USA. The system will be used to treat groundwater containing the chemical perchlorate at an Aerojet manufacturing facility in northern California. The system will be capable of treating up to 4000 gallons per minute, and will be installed by the summer of 1998.

JOHNSON MATTHEY TO INVEST £3 MILLION IN U K Johnson Matthey is to invest approximately £3 million in e x p a n d i n g its p l a n t at Widnes, UK. Conversion of the existing 22 000 square foot plant started in April 1998 and the new facility will be operational by the spring of 1999. Widnes will then become the company's primary electronic materials production site in Europe and will manufacture specialised thermocouples.

facility, and related improvements to the 160-inch plate mill at the company's works in Gary, Indiana, USA. The new heat treating line has the capability to treat a minimum of 73 000 tons of plates annually. The modemisation, which took a year to complete, includes plate handling equipment, a new furnace, automated testing lines and state-of-the-art process control and e n v i r o n m e n t a l equipment.

CONSTRUCTION OF METHANOL PLANT BEGINS CMS E n e r g y C o r p and its joint venture partner, S a m e d a n Oil C o r p , h a v e announced that the construction of a US$400 m i l l i o n methanol production plant in Equatorial Guinea has commenced. The facility will use over 100 million cubic feet per day of existing gas production and will produce a minimum of 2500 metric tons of methanol per day. Commercial operation is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2001.

UPGRADE FACILITY TO IMPROVE COAL Black Hills Corporation has announced that its coal mining s u b s i d i a r y , W y o d a k Resources Development Corp, has entered into a letter of intent with Earthco, a privately held company, to locate a coal upgrading facility at W y o d a k Resources' W y o d a k coal m i n e n e a r Gilette, Wyoming, USA. The upgrading process changes the chemical compo-

sition of the raw coal, reduces its moisture content, and raises the coal's Btu heating value.

OXYGEN PLANT FOR AUSTRALIAN MINING PROJECT Air Products and Chemicals Inc is building a 225 metric t o n - p e r - d a y o x y g e n plant near Kalgoolie, Australia. The new gas facility will supply Anaconda Operations Pty Ltd's nickel and cobalt mining and processing project, 400 miles east of Perth. The new plant is expected to come on-stream in the autumn of 1998.

SYNTHETEC CONTINUES EXPANSIONS Synthetec Inc is to further expand its recently completed manufacturing facility at Albany, Oregon, USA. The US$5 million second phase of capital expansion will add four multi-purpose reactor systems and auxiliary equipment to the facility, which produces peptide building blocks for pharmaceuticals. The proposed expansion is expected to be completed by mid-calendar 1999.

HYDROCARBONS PLANT GETS CAPACITY EXTENSION Woodside Offshore Petroleum has awarded a m a j o r c o n t r a c t in a p r o j e c t d e s i g n e d to expand the hydrocarbon liquids capacity of an Australian plant, to a joint venture led by the MW Kellogg Company.

An estimated A$650 million is being invested in the gas treatment plant near Karratha, Australia, and includes the construction of an additional gas fractionation plant, with an LPG production capacity of 4500 rpd, and a general upgrade of the plant's utilities and services. The project is expected to be c o m p l e t e d before the end of 2000.

TEXAS OIL FACILITY TO EXPAND BY 50% Plains R e s o u r c e s Inc has received approval to construct an additional one million barrels of tankage at its crude oil storage and termin a l f a c i l i t y in C u s h i n g , Oklahoma, USA. Construction of the US$10 million expansion project is expected to begin within the next three months and is scheduled for completion in early to mid-1999. The expansion project will increase Plain's existing capacity by 50 per cent, and will consist of four tanks, having a shell capacity of 250 000 barrels each.

THREE NEW CRACKER UNITS FOR MEXICO The MW Kellogg Technology Co has been a w a r d e d the design of three new fluid cata l y t i c c r a c k i n g u n i t s in Mexico. The new units, for Petroleos Mexicanos-Refinacion, will be located in three different cities in Mexico. Of the three proposed units, one will be located in Salina Cruz, with a capacity of 28 000 bpsd; another will be in Tula, with a capacity of 25 500 bpsd; and the third will be located in Minatitlan, with a capacity of 42 000 bpsd.
