F O C U S technologies. Major industry players say that technology development will create growth opportunities for the industry. Research is now focused on powder coatings that can be cured at low temperatures, allowing their use on plastics and woods that cannot withstand the high temperatures required for curing current powder coating offerings. A pie chart shows the size and segmentation of North America’s powder coatings market. Another pie chart illustrates technology segmentation of North America’s powder coatings market. R and D has new lease of life New R and D developments have been presented at the recent Fatipec 2008 Congress. One paper focused on the use of thermally cross-linkable polymers to repair damaged powder coatings by simply heating the

object above a certain threshold temperature. Another paper presented an alternative flow and levelling agent that overcomes problems encountered by current commercial additives. Meanwhile, the powder coatings industry recently saw a flurry of M & A activities. BASF has launched a €3.8 bn bid to acquire no less than two-thirds of Ciba’s registered shares. The deal is anticipated to conclude in 1Q 2009 at the latest. This will bolster the company’s ranking in the plastics additives, paper chemicals and coating effect materials market. Protech/ Oxyplast Group is slated to purchase the powder coatings business of US firm EnviroPowder. PPCJ, Polymers, Paint, Colour Journal, Oct 2008, 198 (4529), 16
