F O C US France: paints and coatings market stagnated in 2003 French coatings manufacturers recorded a slight downturn of 0.3% in production volume (838,000 tonnes) in 2003. Sales of water based coatings increased by 2.8% to 45% of the market volume. Powder coatings recorded a 10% downturn in 2002, which was more than compensated for in 2003. Sales volumes of radiation cure coatings increased by 6.7% to 4800 tonnes in 2003. French production of printing inks decreased by 1.8% to 94,645 tonnes. NEW PRODUCTS New corrosion inhibitors from Halox Halox has made available Halox 710 and Halox 720 corrosion inhibitors for super-durable powder coating purposes. They are free flowing, non-refractive white powders containing low moisture. Halox 710 is claimed to impart outstanding performance on aluminium and iron phosphate substrates while Halox 720 provides favourable and costeffective benefits on aluminium and iron phosphate substrates. These products are easy to use and can be included in the premix stage of powder coating production. Paint & Coatings Industry (PCI), Jul 2004, 20 (7), 108

mechanical characteristics and outstanding weathering endurance. This super-durable carboxyl functional polyester is intended to cure by PT-910 crosslinkers. The carboxylated polyester M-8792 is engineered to be used with ßhydroxyalkylamides to manufacture coatings with superb exterior durability. M-8762 is a pre-catalysed carboxyl functional polyester resin intended to cure with bisphenol-A epoxy curatives at 50/50 ratios. Paint & Coatings Industry (PCI), Jul 2004, 20 (7), 108
Pigments and additives for optimum coatings from Clariant Clariant’s Pigments & Additives Division exhibited its newest products at the Middle East Coatings Show in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 9-10 Mar 2004. New products include the Hostaperm pigments with elevated hardness (available in grades Yellow 5HG, Red Violet ERX/RX-WD, Blue RSR and THI Red 4G 70). Hansa Brilliant Yellow 2GX 70-S has been developed for industrial and architectural coatings, and Novaperm F3RK 70-PCA for powder coatings. For printing applications there are PermanentRubine P-L7B01 and HostapermBlue P-VFS with a solvent base for printing on packaging Novaper- Red F6RK has exceptional hardness. New products for digital printing include Tonerwax S80, and TP Licocene PP6102 is the first metallocene wax for toners. Ceridust 6073, 6074 and 6075 are new texture additives from the Ceridust range of micronised products. Exolit flame retardant additives are halogen free and are easy to process. They have low smoke densities and do not release additional corrosive gases. Revista de Plasticos Modernos, Jun 2004, 87 (576), 577 (in Spanish)
C O AT I N G S Conductive polymers developed to replace chromates A new group of corrosionresistant conducting polymers has been developed as a replacement for toxic chromates in paints and other coating systems by the group led by Prof Sze Yang at the University of Rhode Island. The new product is a conducting polymer that is used as an additive and can emulate the most important functions of chromates, ie, it inhibits the process of corrosion electrochemically. Unlike other efforts to develop singlestrand, corrosion-resistant conducting polymers, this low-cost polymer has a second strand that allows a variety of modifications to its physical structure, making it more malleable and adaptable for many application processes, including spraying, dipping or spin coating. Major potential markets include coating of aluminium alloys for aircraft, aluminium and steel for the automotive industry, and concrete-reinforcing bars for bridges, highways and buildings. The polymers are effective as a low-cost, minor additive to paint, and can be soluble in commercial paint solvents and used in waterbased epoxies. It also is effective for surface treatments, steel coil coating, and as a corrosion resistant primer under other resincoating systems. Contact: Prof Sze Cheng Yang, University of Rhode Island. Email:
