F O C US mm for the hybrid systems, which exhibited slight hair cracks. The TGIC systems showed no hair cracks up to 8 mm. Direct and reverse impact tests were performed at three different loads. In the hybrid systems there were no signs of cracking in tests up to 160 kg/cm loads, but cracking was evident at 200 kg/cm loads. TGIC systems were unaffected up to 200 kg/cm. Both hybrid and TGIC systems showed excellent solvent resistance and pencil hardness results were 6H in all tests. Scratch hardness at 5 kg wt was very good for TGIC systems. Chemical resistance to acid, alkali and salt spray was acceptable for the TGIC systems. The economics of the process was evaluated and it was calculated that the use of GRR/PET gives a cost reduction of about 50%. In view of the fact that the annual world PET production for fibre and bottles is around 30 M tonnes, the waste generated offers a promising source for reducing the cost of polyester powder coatings. Paper entitled “Polyester Resins Derived from Poly (Ethylene Terephthalate) Waste and Oligomers(GRR/PET) for the Powder Coating Industry” by Tamboli Hemankumar R and V C Malshe of the Plastic and Paint Division, University Institute of Chemical Technology (UICT), Nathalal Parikh Road, Mumbai 400019, India

Coil coatings roll The North American coil coating market is being dominated by four major paint producers such as PPG, Valspar, Akzo and BASF providing around $700 M to $800 M worth of paint, according to the ChemQuest Group. These companies cater to around 75 coil coating firms in the region that operate roughly 100 coating lines. UV cured and powder coatings are forecast to be growth areas for the coil coating market particularly in developing countries, since installation of UV curing methods needs lower capital investment. Coil coating operations in North America are said to have already addressed VOC issues and its consolidated market results in higher profitability.
