Papers from invited speakers at the First Latin American Meeting on Biological Inorganic Chemistry – LABIC2008
A portion of this issue of the Journal of Inorganic Biochemistry consists of papers contributed by selected invited speakers from the XIV Brazilian Meeting on Inorganic Chemistry – BMIC2008 and First Latin American Meeting on Biological Inorganic Chemistry – LABIC2008, which were held jointly in Iguaçu Falls, State of Paraná, Brazil from August 31 to September 4, 2008. The BMIC series began as a Brazilian national meeting in 1982 under the title ‘‘Brazilian Inorganic Chemistry Symposium” (or SNQI). It gained an international profile from the 1998 conference with the new title ‘‘Brazilian Meeting on Inorganic Chemistry – BMIC”. BMIC is nowadays well established in the international research calendar of the Inorganic Chemistry community and related areas. The organization of the 2008 edition in parallel with the First Latin American Meeting on Biological Inorganic Chemistry – LABIC is a landmark and attests to how the Biological Inorganic Chemistry activities have grown significantly in Latin America in recent years. We look forward in future years to LABIC taking its place alongside other regional areas of the bioinorganic community in Europe and Asia, as well as internationally. BMIC–LABIC 2008 joint-meetings were organized under an exciting scientific program with more than 400 contributions, from

more than 1000 authors of 11 different countries. 4 plenary lectures, 37 keynote lectures, 36 oral presentations and more than 300 posters organized in two poster sessions were presented, encouraging interactions among participants. The next conference will be held in 2010, in Rio de Janeiro. Unfortunately in the last 2 years the Latin American Inorganic Chemistry community has lost two of its most important researchers, Professor Icaro S. Moreira and Professor Octavio A.C. Antunes. This important event of having for the first time BMIC–LABIC papers published in JIB is dedicated to their memories. On behalf of the Organizing Committee, Sidney J.L.
