The long-running saga between domnick hunter, Parker and Eaton seems to have been brought to a close, with Eaton deciding that enough is enough and sticking at its final offer (see industry news on page 4.) This leaves the way clear for Parker, which has wasted no time in acquiring 88%-plus of the outstanding shares, allowing it to acquire domnick hunter in its entirety. Reading various newswires and talking to those with their ears to the ground, seems to indicate that a number of conglomerates (especially in the US) are currently awash with surplus cash, and looking to acquisitions as a way of remaining profitable in light of trends such as high raw material costs, which are eating into profitability. A well-placed acquisition can grow sales while cutting costs, adding valuable percentage points to earnings and keeping the shareholder happy. Financially omnipresent Standard & Poor’s reports that the major players have money to spend at present after a period of rosy earnings, and though remaining cautious (Eaton declined to bid what it perceived to be over the odds for domnick hunter) further M&A action can be expected. It will be no surprise if we see other high-profile filtration and separation companies being bought up in the coming months. In this month’s magazine we focus on some themes in the automobile industry. Both in the US and Europe, new environmental regulations are changing the landscape for manufacturers, at the same time creating opportunities for companies that provide emissions reducing technologies, both inside and outside of the vehicle. We start on page 18, with a fascinating angle into market demands in cabin air filters (and the potential importance of tools such as olfactometric testing), written by Freudenberg’s Dr Heinz Reinhardt. On page 24 we publish part 2 of Paolo Tronville and Richard Rivers’ look at international standards for filters; part 2 deals with vehicles and if you’re interested, part 1 (September 2005 – 4207 – page 39) looked at filters for buildings and gas turbines. And finally, on page 28, Ahlstrom’s Jerome Barrillon looks at the influence nonwovens are having on filters for vehicles.
