Experiments were c a r r i e d o u t on s o i l o f d i f f e r e n t s.c. using 13-28, 14-28, 13-30 and 14-30 tyres with or w i t h o u t wheel w e i g h t s o r w a t e r b a l l a s t at inflation p r e s s u r e s o f 0 . 8 , 1 . 0 , 1 . 4 a n d 2 . 0 arm. The D.B. p u l l a n d t r a c t i o n e f f i c i e n c y were determined in relation t o r a d i a l l o a d , s l i p and contact area between tyre and soil. This report presents results of tests to determine the magnitude sad distribution of stresses b e n e a t h s e v e r a l t y p e s o f p n e u m a t i c t i r e s on an u n y i e l d i n g s u r f a c e . T w e n t y - n i n e tests were performed, in which stresses were m e a s u r e d u n d e r s i x t i r e s , differing in size, shape, and construction, at the points of concoct with a firm surface. Five tires were t e a t e d a t one l o a d and f o r w a r d s p e e d , f o u r o f them a t two i n f l a t i o n pressures or deflect i o n s a n d one a t t h r e e i n f l a t i o n pressures. The o t h e r a n d l a r g e s t t i r e ( 1 1 . 0 0 - 2 0 , 12-PR) was t e s t e d a t t h r e e l o a d s and s t t h r e e d e f l e c t i o n s for each load while both rolling forw a r d a n d s t a n d i n g . The d a t a showed a zone o f h i g h s t r e s s e s n e a r t h e e d g e s o f t h e t i r e contact area, the magnitude of the stresses increasing with wheel load, inflation pressure, and sidewall stiffness. Increase in inflation pressure significantly increased the magnitude of t h e s t r e s s in t h e c e n t r e o f t h e c o n t a c t a r e a . The s t i f f e r tires distributed the load l e s s e v e n l y .
