running MS-DOS. When running an online test file, the UNIX-PC proved to be 35% faster than the IBM PC/AT. Because of the virtual memory capabilities, a user with a UNIX-PC can have more variables per file than a user with a PC running DOS. P-STAT for the AT&T UNIX PC will be licensed for $995.00 in North America and Europe. The price includes one year of software updates and end-user support. Optional maintenance will be available after the first year for approximately $300.00 per year. P-STAT is used internationally by educational, commercial, and government installations. SPSS Inc. announced that it will provide users of its SPSS/PC + statistical analysis and reporting package a set of file creation facilities in the form of a new option, SPSS/PC + Data Entry, and new file translate procedures in the base system. The full-screen, high-resolution forms that may be created with Data Entry simplify the process of entering new data files, especially for someone unfamiliar with both computers and the data. The ability to translate quickly Lotus l-2-3, Symphony Multiplan, Wordstar and dBase II and III files into SPSS/PC -t files and back brings the powerful data analysis tools of SPSS/PC + to bear on practically all types of data stored by personal computers. SPSS/PC + can take files created by Data Entry or by its file translate procedures and accomplish large file manipulation tasks such as matching, merging and condensing; data manipulation tasks such as recoding, transforming, sampling and weighting; and statistical analysis. Nearly all of the descriptive, frequency, crosstabular, analysis of variance, hypothesis testing, regression and correlation statistical procedures used in business and research are included in SPSS/PC + and its options. An integrated editor permits preparation of command files for regularly run jobs and the editing of those files while viewing related output in windows on the same screen. The SPSS/PC + report generator provides flexible formatting for producing documents. The SPSS/PC + Graphics featuring Microsoft Chart and SPSS/PC + Tables options make presentation-quality graphs and tables from SPSS/PC + data files. Data Entry forms may be made to resemble the document on which information has been recorded to reduce confusion and make it easy for clerical staff to enter and edit data. As each field is filled on the screen, the cursor advances automatically to the next field, precluding the spacing errors common to data entry. Validity constraints may be put on any field to protect the data file from aberrant values, such as ‘pregnant male”. After requesting that Data Entry clean the data, the user is presented with a report telling which cases do not meet the constraints and should be edited. Complete integration of Data Entry with every part of the SPSS/PC + system allows the user to inspect and edit data sets at any moment during analysis or preparation of reports. SPSS/PC + runs on the IBM PC/XT, PC/AT and compatibles. I’gr more information, write SPSS at 444 North Michigan Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60611, or call 312/329-3500.
