BOOK REVIEWS Assessment: This is an excellent resource for diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopists who deal with patients with suspected or established gastrointestinal cancers. In addition, it can serve as a useful reference for other oncological subspecialties. It brings together the different disciplines of gastrointestinal oncology and gastrointestinal endoscopy in a very organized fashion using evidence-based medicine. The book compares very favorably with two other books in the field of gastrointestinal oncology: Abbruzzese, et al., Gastrointestinal Oncology (Oxford University Press, 2004) And Kochman, The Clinician’s Guide to Gastrointestinal Oncology (Slack Incorporated, 2005). Endoscopic Oncology: Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and Cancer Management Editors: Faigel, Douglas O., MD, FACG, FASGE; Kochman, Michael L., MD, FACP, FASGE Bibliographic Data: ISBN: 978-1-58829-532-3, 392 pages, hard cover. ISBN-10: 158829532X 1st Edition. Humana Press Inc., 2006, $195.00 Description: This excellent book brings together the disciplines of gastrointestinal oncology and therapeutic endoscopy, reviewing the epidemiology, diagnosis, and management of gastrointestinal, pancreatic, and biliary cancer with a special emphasis on endoscopic management. The authors use current evidence-based medicine when reviewing medical, surgical, and endoscopic management of the various cancers. Purpose: To provide an interface between gastrointestinal oncology and gastrointestinal diagnostic/therapeutic endoscopy. The authors fulfill this most important goal by addressing the role of endoscopy in the diagnosis and management of gastrointestinal malignancies and by reviewing medical and surgical management. The book systematically reviews these topics in anatomic order: esophagus, stomach, colorectum, and pancreatobiliary system. Audience: This is a comprehensive reference for therapeutic gastrointestinal endoscopists. But because of its multidisciplinary approach to the management of gastrointestinal cancer, it serves as an excellent reference for medical and radiation oncologists, and surgeons. This can be clearly noted through each section of the book. The authors have expertise in both therapeutic endoscopy and gastrointestinal oncology. Features: The book emphasizes the role of endoscopy in the diagnosis and management of these malignancies. A unique feature is the emphasis on endoscopic ultrasound as an important tool for the diagnosis and staging of gastrointestinal cancers. The coverage of therapeutic endoscopy for these cancers includes photodynamic therapy for HGD and early cancers of the esophagus, endoscopic mucosal resection, endoscopic submucosal dissection, and stent placement, to name a few. In addition, the book discusses chemotherapeutic, radiotherapeutic, and surgical approaches to these cancers. Another unique feature is the use of algorithms and tables to present recent evidence-based medical data supporting the various therapeutic approaches. One shortcoming of the book, which certainly does not take away much from its overall importance to the field, is the use of black-and-white endoscopic pictures throughout.

Purpose: To provide a simple, direct guide about caring for perioperative patients, especially for physicians who are not anesthesiologists or surgeons. It is particularly useful for physicians to prepare for certification, recertification, CME, but would also be useful for students and residents. Audience: The book is suitable for anyone who cares for perioperative patients, but it is particularly designed for physicians who do not provide care for this group of patients on a daily basis. Features: The seven chapters in the first of the book’s five sections address general aspects of perioperative care as applied to common procedures and methods to assess operative risk, pain management and special conditions, such as those requiring anticoagulation. The second section discusses perioperative care aspects that are specific to different kinds of surgery and covers abdominal, thoracic, vascular, bariatric and subspecialty surgery. The third section covers the preoperative evaluation and management of a variety of medical conditions, such as cardiac, pulmonary, endocrine, coagulopathy, renal and liver failure and a variety of other common disorders. Section four covers pro-

phylaxis of different postoperative problems such as DVT, SBE, wound infection, and malnutrition. The fifth section covers the evaluation and management of postoperative complications, ranging from fever and hypertension to jaundice and delirium. Many tables, lists, and references appear throughout the book. Assessment: The book covers a broad range of perioperative situations and problems, providing a useful overview of them, both in terms of how to detect and confirm a disorder and how to manage it. It is an excellent distillation of information into useful, concise knowledge. The tables are particularly useful while reading the book for the first time and and for reference at a later date. The level of detail is sufficient, including all of the important details that one should think about when actually confronted with a particular problem. This should appeal to a broad range of medical practitioners and is certainly a useful addition to the literature. into improved treatment for patients with prostate cancer. These topics are important and appropriate for physicians treating these patients. Purpose: A demonstration of how basic research activities are relevant to clinical practice and how work at the bench can be translated to the patient’s bedside. It is increasingly recognized that research directed in this manner is most important and has been successful benefiting patients. This book clearly shows how this process occurs. Audience: Written for researchers and clinicians interested in prostate cancer. The topics reviewed are being investigated by many and the book should be of interest to these individuals. The editors and chapter authors are recognized authorities and have appropriately addressed their assigned topics. Features: The book addresses factors resulting in the etiology of prostate cancer, its growth and various therapies. Many in the latter category remain at the bench, but their evolution to the bedside is not far away. These offer much promise for patients with aggressive and/or advanced disease. The concept of basic research evolving to the clinical arena is not new, but this book specifically targets this concept at prostate cancer–a common and important disease affecting men worldwide. Assessment: A new book addressing the important concept of bench research evolving to the bedside. It is increasingly recognized that efforts in this manner are needed to advance clinical care. The book should be of interest to those interested in research activities and in clinical care of men with prostate cancer.
