Subject: Otolaryngology trauma Description: This multi-authored atlas describes management of craniofacial trauma. Purpose: A guide is provided for those managing head and neck trauma with particular emphasis on illustrations and delineations of rules for management and pitfalls in therapy. Audience: Plastic and reconstructive surgeons, otolaryngologists, head and neck general surgeons, and trauma surgeons are an appropriate audience for this work, which comes from the Berlin Trauma Center. Features: After initial examination principles are reviewed, craniofacial injuries are emphasized with reconstructive photographs of facial, skull-base, orbit, and laryngotracheal injuries. An excellent collection of radiographs, color photographs, and color line drawings is provided. The text is brief with emphasis on clinical presentation, surgical anatomy, and specific pathology. There are no references apart from a list of secondary sources, which follows the last chapter. The table of contents is extensive, dividing each chapter into its component parts. Thus, readers can readily identify topics and subtopics. A concluding subject index of 10 pages provides adequate access to content. Assessment: This book can be recommended for its excellent anatomic drawings and depiction of principles for surgical repair. Clinical photographs are of good quality. DVD provides excellent interactive comprehensive review of athletic injuries to the elbow. Using the program requires minimum computer knowledge, mostly point and click with color codes and bookmarks to help navigate. Purpose: This is a great individual tutorial or it can be used as a group tutorial on certain elbow conditions. This product can be used to provide up-to-date information and references for evaluation and treatment. Audience: This is a good learning tool for veteran nonacademic surgeons and residents just learning. It also can be useful for teach primary care physicians. The commentary is by the leading experts in the field of elbow surgery. Features: The installation is simple. The format originally looks daunting but the learning curve is short. Closing programs in the middle seems puzzling at times. The content seems pretty comprehensive and the DVD also provides a direct tutorial on the material without quizzing, as in the case study sections. Both of these programs make for a complete program. Video clips of examples help drive home points. Besides covering the most common injuries, it also includes good cases of not so common injuries that may mimic common ones and/or can be complications of surgery. Assessment: This program contains excellent material and presents it in an interactive way that provides an opportunity for good retention. It allows for review and tutorial if not understood or retained initially. It can be used by surgeons and nonsurgeons.
