Octave Terrillon was born in Oigny-sur-Seine, France, on 17 May 1844. He studied medicine at the University of Paris, graduating in 1873. Terrillon subsequently trained as a surgeon and was appointed Professor of Surgery at the Salpêtrière and Lourcine Hospitals in Paris. He is remembered as a pioneer of surgical asepsis. As early as 1882, he used boiling water for the heat sterilizaiton of surgical instruments. He wrote a monograph about this technique in 1892. He died in Paris at the age of 51 years on 22 December 1895 as a result of septicaemia secondary to a chronic eye infection acquired during an operation. He was honoured by the issue of this French postage stamp in 1957. P. Wright
