Book Review PLANT BREEDING Plant B r e e d i n g R e v i e w s , Vol. I. Jules Janick (Editor). Avi Publishing, West-
port, CT, xii + 397 pp., 1983, price US$ 33.00, elsewhere $36.50, ISSN0730-2207, ISBN-0-87055-397-6. The scope of this new periodical is "plant breeding" in its broadest sense, involving agricultural, horticultural and forestry crops. The first volume starts with an interesting dedication to Henry A. Jones, the well-known onion breeder. Next come reviews on petunia, bean, maize protein, sweet corn, pearl millet, soy beans, black walnut, lettuce and apple rootstocks, all written by experts -- mostly from the U.S.A. -- and hence valuable to workers wi~h these crops. In first instance, therefore, the publishing of this periodical is welcomed. Upon second thoughts, however, some doubts arise. Although the aim is to cove:c field, horticultural and forestry crops, 6 of the treated crops are horticultural, 3 are field crops, none are forestry. This raises the question " W h y have these 6 horticultural reviews not been incorporated in "Horticultural Reviews", edited by the same editor, published by the same publisher (cf. Scientia Hortic., 13 (1980) 299)"? This overlapping of contents between 2 reviewing periodicals is confusing and compels the horticulturist to consult both, although one of them will certainly contain papers which are not primari:ly within his field of interest.
