COMPANY NEWS Hoechst acquires Color&&
Hoechst has acquired 97% of the German manufacturer of pigments for the plastics industry, Colorplast, based at Dobeln in Saxony. According to Hoechst, Colorplast lost virtually all of its business to Western suppliers in the second half of 1990. (Colorplast was originally within E. Germany).
Joint venture for moulding compounds
BASF, Takeda Chemical Industries, and Owens-Corning Fiberglas, have formed a new joint venture relating to the production of bulk and sheet moukling compounds. The agreement allows the firms to share unsaturated polyester resins and vinyl ester resins technology, and will initially concentrate on the automotive market where co-operation and uniform standards play an important role, since the requirements of car manufacturers are the same the world over. In addition to this prime focus, the partners will exchange knowhow on new or improved resins with better corrosion resistance and lower environmental impact. All three companies manufacture resins or components for SMCs and BMCs and will be able to serve their customers better, because of technology exchange.
BOOKS/PUBLICATIONS Plastics additives handbook
The 3rd edition of “Plastics Additives” edited by R. Gahter and H. Muller is now available. Its format is similar to the second edition, with individual chapters on specific additive classes. It describes the theory of action of additives, the physical and chemical factors involved, and the use of additives in specific polymer types. The new version contains information on new developments and new chapters are provided on fibrous reinforcements, and on the detection, identification and quantification of additives. “Plastics Additives” is published at .257.00 by: Carl Hanser Verlcg, Mm&en, Wien, and Macmillan Publishing Co. , New York, (USA).
