Frost & Sullivan has published a report containing over 360 pages with more than 100 tables and figures which examine in detail the West European market for plastics additives. The study provides a market analysis and forecast with detailed market data for the years 1988, 1989, 1992 and 1993. The market for plastics additives is segmented into: plasticizers (5 types; fme retardants (5 types); antioxidants (6 types); heat stabilizers (5 types), UV stabilizers (3 types): pigments (5 types); 01990 Elsevier Science Publishers Ltd.

Additivesfor l’otvmrs blowing agents (5 types). Consumption of these materials is given for the following countries; Benelux; France; Italy. Spain; the UK; West Germany. Additionally, for each of these countries the polymer consumption is given in tonnes for 1988-1993 for six polymer types. The leading producers of plastics additives are identified and their market shares given in dollar terms. In the text, information is provided on additives usage and the polymer industries in the countries covered by the study. Initially, the data in the report were gathered from published literature in this field - journals, statistics published by governments and industrial and trade associations and also individual company literature. Field interviews were then carried out with plastics additives manufacturers, raw material suppliers and the users of plastics additives. The notation obtained in this way was augmented by discussions with research institutes and industry experts. The report is composed of six main sections. After a comprehensive Executive Summary, Section 1 defines the objectives of the report, the scopeof the investigation and the methodology used in carrying it out. Section II is concerned with the nature of plastics materials and the processing stages to which they are subjected: calendering; casting, extrusion; foam production; thermoforming are all reviewed in turn. The properties and applications of plastics additives are described in Section III. Considerable statistical information is presented in the Section. This includes the p~u~on of phthalate plasticizers by company in tonnage terms and the market shares of the suppliers of blowing agents in tonnes. Suppliers of key materials are identified and the technical advantages and shortcomings of individual plastics additives types are discussed in detail; all of this is underpinned with extensive commercial information. The subject of Section IV is the end-use applications for plastics additives. Relevant commercial aspects of the chief polymers are reviewed and their consumption and end-use applications quantified in tonnes. The roles played by the various additive types in individual polymers are discussed at length and the specific additives used in conjunction with the main polymers are identified. The central market statistics are featured in Section V. ~~oducto~ passages examine the cment background and the future prospects of the West European plastics industry and the various external factors likely to influence its development. The report, designated El 175 costs $3,850 and is available from:

The masterbatch industry in w. Europe

Applied Market Information has published a detailed survey of the West European masterbatch industry. According to AM1 during the last two years there have been 20 new changes in corporate ownership in Europe. In addition approximately 20 new companies have been established and around 5 have gone out of business. In an industry where there are about 150 active companies such changes indicate that the structure of the masterbatch industry is being fundamentally altered. In the last two years independent suppliers have significantly increased their share of the total market in all segments of the industry as the following table shows: INTEGRATED PRODUCERS SHARE OF THE WEST EUROPEAll MASTERBATCH MARKET 1986 AND 1988 ‘%

Besides these corporate changes demand for masterbatch has also been rapidly increasing during the last two years with AM1 reporting a growth rate of 19.0% per year for the industry overall. However, this high rate of growth is not expected to continue in the coming years and AMI predict a growth rate of around 2.8% per annum up until 1992.
