Additives for Polymers

February 1992

When combined with thermosetting resins, the additives enable the production of moulded composite parts with improved dimensional stability and better surface finish. Ashland Chemical is well established in the automotive industry for its resins systems which give Class A finish: the company supplies material for such vehicles as the Chevrolet Corvette, General Motors APV minivans and the Lotus Elan. Henkel Corp. Plastics Additives Division

Henkel Corp., Gulph Mills, Pa., (USA) has reorganized its Plastics Additives Division, bringing together its plasticizers, lubricants and surfactants units. The move is aimed at centralizing the additives division’s technical support, marketing and sales efforts in Ambler, Pa. Previously, Henkel’s Plastolein plasticizers business was part of Henkel’s Emery Group in Cincinnati.

BOOKS/PUBLICATIONS Spatially Reinforced Composites

A new book, Spatially Reinforced Composites, gives a general and systematic presentation of key information on composites with spatial layup schemes. This is the first monograph in the world scientific literature devoted wholly to composites with spatial reinforcement patterns. Topics include: two-, three-, and n-dimensional materials, as well as whiskers; strain curves, design models, engineering formulas for evaluation of elastic characteristics; numerical estimates of components of strength and stiffness matrices for each type of composite; the effect of structural and technological parameters on strength and stiffness; and interlaminar shear and transverse tension strengths. Written by Yu. M. Tarnopol’skii, I. G. Zhigun, and V. A. Polyakov, institute of Polymer Mechanics, Latvian Academy of Sciences, Latvia, this book is a combination of strict scientific approach and practical recommendations. Scientific researchers and engineers engaged in the manufacture, study and applications of composites will find this book essential.
