A hand-held, trigger-controlled X-ray inspection imaging scope from Lixi shows 5 cm diameter, real-time images of product defects. Since it is lightweight and portable, the device can be used on-line to identify production faults, and has already been used by electronics and cable manufacturers. Inspection of composites and aluminium castings are other possible applications. Lixi Inc, Downers

Portable magnetic crack detection equipment available from Vitosonics (UK), Digimag 2000, can be used for prod and coil magnetizing. Output is 2 kA HWDC and 1.7 kA AC RMS, and the unit weights 25 kg - the company claims that this is the highest power-toweight ratio of similar available equipment. Output is infinitely variable from zero to maximum, so the unit can also be used for demagnetizing.

The equipment is built into a rugged case with a digital ammeter display. Current is displayed only when flowing through the test piece or an encircling coil and the reading is held for 1 2 s after the magnetizing ‘shot’. Vitosonics (UK) Ltd, Marshgate Drive, Hertford, Hem SG13 lAN, UK
