Wearing a different hat Some professions and occupations are distinguished by the hats they wear, and this can be a useful sign of their official responsibility. Amongst engineers it is usually only those who work on construction sites or large processing plants that have this advantage, the rest of us have to make do with the name of the main occupation we follow. It is here that the problem is arising increasingly with heat pumps. Most heat pumps are essentially refrigeration systems working above ambient temperatures, and so refrigeration engineers are increasingly finding themselves devoting more and more of their time to them. Surely we do not want to have 'heat-pump engineers' distinguished from 'refrigeration engineers'. The challenge therefore is to find a new collective title. 'Energy engineers' will not do because designers of boilers and power generation equipment would have a far greater claim to it. Any suggestions?
